Before taking the Education Philosophy Inventory, I considered myself to identify most

with the perennialism educational philosophy and the behaviorism learning style. These beliefs

come from the way that I was raised and how I was taught in school. It impacted how I thought

of teaching and since perennialism and behaviorism was what most of my teachers followed and

taught, that is what I identified most with.

From taking the inventory, I discovered that my views and beliefs were most closely

related to progressivism and humanism. Taking the inventory allowed me to think more about

what I truly believe in teaching and the methods and ways that it should be approached. The

progressivism philosophy is the belief that education should focus on the student and how they

think and feel. The students should have their own thoughts and ideas and work on their values

to help better themselves. After learning about progressivism, I was able to see how my beliefs

and values match up well with the philosophy.

Furthermore, the humanism learning style, in summary, is the belief that people are good

and are able to grow and flourish and are able to control their fate. Personally, I think this

approach suits me. I believe that people are internally good and that they can be good, beneficial

people to society if they apply themselves and make that effort. I also strongly believe that

people control their own fate. There are consequences to your actions and that will impact you

and the things that you do.

Following the beliefs and style of progressivism and humanism will allow my teaching to

focus more on my students and not strictly on teaching all the content. I want my students to

have their own ideas and be able to share and express them freely. I also want to be able to aid

my students in working on themselves and understanding what responsibility and consequences

are. Students should not feel pressured to be a certain way. They should have the freedom to be

who they want and act how they want.
