Topic: Strategic use of ICT in the Digital Economy

ABSTRACT
This study describes the strategic use of Information Communication Technology
to formulate a new business area that is deals with selling and purchasing of goods and
service through internet and computer network. ICT and E-business applications
provide many benefits across a wide range of intra- and inter- firm business processes
and transactions. In this study we will discuss about SWOT analysis of using ICT in
formulating E-business which will comprise of strength, weakness, opportunities, and
threats faced by e-business.

INTRODUCTION
Electronic Business (E-Business) is the administration conducting any businesses
using internet, extranet, web, and intranet. This would include buying and selling of
goods or goods using commercial transactions conducted electronically along with
providing customer or technical support with the help of internet.
Information Communication Technology (ICTs) is a broader term for Information
Technology, which refers to communication technologies, including the internet,
wireless networks, cellphones, computers, software, middleware, video conferencing,
social networking, and other media applications and services enabling users to access,
store, transmit and manipulate information in digital form. ICTs also used to refer to
the convergence of media technology such as audio visual and telephone networks with
computer networks, by means of a unified system of cabling or link system.
ICT applications improve information and knowledge management inside the firm
and can reduce transaction costs and increase the speed and reliability of transactions
for both business to business and business to consumer transactions. In addition, they
are effective tools for improving external communications and quality of services for
established and new customers.
Basically, strategic use of ICT has a great impact in formulating an Electronic
Business, especially in E-commerce.
STRENGTH
1) Strong online presence on different social networking sites and efficient social
media management can enhance positive effect of electronic word-of-mouth and
develop strong relationships with customers.
2) The well developed and efficiently integrated IT infrastructure can improve the
operational efficiency and increase knowledge of the latest trends.
3) Lower transaction cost. Things can be automated in a well implemented online
store. If download facility is available, then distribution cost can be cut off.
4) More rapid multi-factor productivity growth. The use of ICT can help the
business to increase their overall efficiency in combining labour and capital.

WEAKNESS
1) ICT can isolate people and erode their inter-dependencies, which is harmful to
the business relies on team efforts.
2) ICT takes money and time to keep current and improve, sometimes just to
remain competitive.

OPPORTUNITIES
1) The business with the used of Web-based system will support buying, selling,
and customer service using electric-commerce.
2) Integrating ICT with business will enhance the business operation electronically.
3) Almost all the organizations, public or private, in manufacturing, agriculture or
services use information technologies because it has become the major facilitator
of business activities.
4) Business can use ICT systems to benefit from improvements such as reducing
cost, increasing efficiency, improving decision-making, and increasing the
competitiveness in the marketplace.

THREATS
1) Hardware and software failure – such as power loss or data corruption.
2) Malware – malicious software design to disrupt computer operation.
3) Viruses- computer code that can copy itself and spread from one another, often
disrupting computer operations.
4) Spam, scams, and phishing – unsolicited email that seeks to fool people into
revealing personal details or buying fraudulent goods.
5) Human error – incorrect data processing, careless data disposal, or accidental
opening of infected email attachments.

CONCLUSION
As evidence in the discussion above ICT has a great revolutionary effect in
businesses. In fact, technology can be considered as part and parcel of business
operations. It is therefore concluded that ICT can helps reduce costs, improve
productivity, improves business performance, and improves profitability of a
business. Still there are still challenges and threats to be experienced, so it is more
necessary to study ICT carefully.
