Academic Year: 2019-2020 (Even Semester)
TUTORIAL SHEET
Degree, Semester& Branch : IV Semester B.E EEE
Course Code & Title : EE8401 Electrical Machines-II
Name of the Faculty member : Mr. E. Thangam, AP(SG) / EEE
Tutorial No.: 9 Date:

Questions:

1. A 75 kW, 400 V, 4 pole, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has a resistance and
synchronous reactance per phase of 0.04Ω and 0.4Ω respectively. Calculate for full load
0.8 pf lead the open-circuit emf per phase and gross mechanical power developed.
Assume an efficiency of 92.5% [CO2,L2]

2. A 1000 kVA, 11000 V, 3 – phase star-connected synchronous motor has an armature

resistance and reactance per phase of 3.5 Ω and 40 Ω respectively. Determine the
induced EMF and angular retardation of the rotor when fully loaded at 0.8 p.f. lagging
and 0.8 p.f. loading. [CO2,L3]

3. A 3000 V, 3 phase synchronous motor running at 1500 r.p.m, has its excitation kept
constant corresponding to no-load terminal voltage of 3000 V. Determine the power
input, power factor and torque developed for all armature current of 250 A if the
synchronous reactance is 5Ω per phase and armature resistance is neglected. [CO2,L3]

4. A three phase, 6600 V, star connected synchronous motor delivers 500 kW power to the
full load. Its full load efficiency is 83 %. Its armature resistance is 0.3 Ω per phase and
synchronous reactance is 3.2 Ω per phase. It is working with 0.8 leading power factor on
full load. Calculate: (i) generated e.m.f on full load, (ii) the load angle. [CO2,L3]

5. In a 3 phase, star connected 660 V synchronous motor has the synchronous reactance of
2 ohm per phase. When a certain load is applied. The input is 90 kW and the back emf is
890 V. neglecting resistance, calculate the power factor. [CO2,L3]

CO2: After completion of the course, the students will be able to describe the concept,
principle and performance of synchronous motor.
L1: Remember; L2: Understand; L3: Apply
