2. Attention to procedures. a. How are students to signal that they want my attention and help? My students should raise their hand to signal that they need my attention and help b. How will I call on students during question and discussion sessions? I will call on my students during question and discussion sessions by the ones who have their hand raised and will be called using their first name unless two students are both raising their hand with same first same the last name will also be used. c. How and when are students to enter and exit the classroom? Students are to enter the classroom walking quietly and if the entire class is entering, they are to enter slowly in a straight line and go to their desks. Unless it is in the morning or after recess, they should put their personal items away and then go sit at their desks and wait for instructions. For exiting the room, the rules follow with being quiet and walking slowly in a straight line. d. How are students to obtain the materials for instruction? Students are to obtain the materials for instruction from their work assignment cubbies as that will be where their pencil cases and workbooks will be held. e. How are students to store their personal items? Students will have their own personal cubby to hang their backpacks, coats, and any other personal items that do not belong in the child’s reach or by their seats. f. What are my procedures for students going to the drinking fountain or rest room? Students may go to drinking fountains or rest rooms during the in-between of subject lessons unless it is a dire emergency. g. What are my procedures during class interruptions? Class interruptions will not be tolerated, and the student will be spoken to privately when the time is appropriate. h. What are my procedures for tardies or early dismissals? Students who are tardy will be asked to enter room without disrupting any of the other students and get settled to join in with what the other students are doing. Procedures for early dismissals will be operated somewhat similar and the student will be asked to get their stuff together in a quiet timely manner and wait to be taken to office if its younger children. i. What are my procedures for turning in homework? Homework which includes must be handed in every Friday of each week in the completed homework basket. j. What are my procedures for turning in late homework? Late homework will be expected up until that unit is over. Once the unit ends late work will still be accepted but the student won’t receive a grade in the gradebook for it. 3. List of student behavior expectation that I will present to my class: a. Rule 1: Always be a friend b. Rule 2: Raise your hand c. Rule 3: Always be safe d. Rule 4: Use your inside voices e. Rule 5: Show respect + Use manners 4. Explanation of consequences for broken rules: If rules are broken the student will always be spoken to about their actions and a consequence will be given as needed. Depending on the discipline procedure in that class whether it is a clothes pin being moved or a sticker not being given some kind of action will happen so the child will hopefully learn from their actions. 5. How my procedures, rules, or consequences may vary (if at all) according to the grade level taught, or according to any other criteria, such as in team teaching: My procedures, rules, or consequences may vary according to grade level won’t be as simple as the rules above because those rules are to be already expected with older children. If I were to be team teaching though the rules would defiantly be handpicked between the two teachers and always be evaluated. Figure 3.1: Developing a personal classroom management system
My Emerging Plan for Classroom Management
Grade level: Kindergarten My Name: Meaghan Winnans
Plans Before the First Day:
1. Describe your classroom with respect to the physical room arrangement and organization and the positive and caring classroom community that you aim to create: My classroom will be arranged to be flexible where student know where all material is and feel welcome with decorated walls. The students’ desks will be grouped to encourage social interactions and friendships, so no one feels alone or left out. 2. Describe communication you will initiate with your students and their families prior to the first day of school: Prior to the first day of school, I will mail out a welcome package to each of my students that introduces myself and asking for students and their families to respond by introducing themselves and allowing for any before the school year questions/concerns to be asked. After the school year starts conferences with parents will happen routinely and when needed so parents are able to stay updated on their children and their progress. 3. Describe characteristics of your classroom that will signal to the children that it is a friendly and safe place to be: My classroom will be bright and full of welcoming colors that will signal to children that it is a friendly and safe place to be. I will also assign buddies for each child so if anyone needs to go to someone or ask for help, they don’t have to do it alone or feel scared. 4. Describe how you will get to know the children and what you will do to help the children get to know you and each other: On the first day the classroom will play lots of getting to know each other games and doing fun activities before it gets all into expectations and requirements. The First Day: 5. Describe how you will greet the children when they arrive for the first day: I will greet my students on the first day with a warm and welcoming smile at the classroom door individually and then as an entire class once all the students are present. Once the students enter the classroom, they will find a little welcome package on their desk that is there to keep them busy until everyone arrives, so they are not just sitting there. 6. Describe the rules or procedural expectation that you will have already in place and how they will be presented to the children: The few right to the point rules will be posted on the front of the classroom when the children walk in so that they are already presented, and the children can look them over while at their decks. The rules will consist of “Do’s” and not of “Do nots” as this will encourage a positive atmosphere 7. Describe how you will have children contribute to these rules and expectations: The children will contribute to these rules and expectations by if anyone thinks they have a rule that is important to add we will go over it and add it as a class. Children will also be asked to bring in notes of good behavior they did at home to fill up a “Manners matter” jar so that way the rules aren’t just being set in the classroom but go with them outside of school 8. Describe your classroom procedures for: a. Absences; making up missed work and instruction: Absences happen, and students will be required to make up any work missed but if absent for a long period of time work will be put together for pickup for the child to complete at home b. Assigning helps for classroom jobs: Jobs will be on a weekly rotating schedule, so everyone gets a chance at each job during the school year c. Being in the classroom before and after school, and at recess and lunch time: Any time while in the classroom the children should be seated at their seats unless instructed otherwise and should always keep themselves busy with something in front of them like a book d. Bringing in toys, plants, and pets into the classroom: No outside toys, plants, and pets are to be brought into the classroom. Unless the teacher says otherwise about toys for show-in-tell e. Collecting notes, money and forms: Any notes, money, or forms should be given right to the teacher at the beginning of the day and reminders for things to be collected will be emailed to the parents of the upcoming things. f. Distributing and collecting papers and materials: Any papers being given to students to go home will go into their folders but will also be emailed to the parents in case the folders aren’t checked at home. For anything that the teacher should be receiving from home should be brought in by the student or given to the teacher by the parent at drop off or dismissal. g. Eating and drinking in the classroom: No eating in the classroom will take place unless there is a party or that is where they will be having lunch. Drinking wise students are allowed to have a water bottle but no other liquids allowed. h. Going to the bathroom: Remind students that they should do this before coming to the classroom but allow them to go if it’s an emergency during class lessons but if it’s not, allow them to go in-between lessons i. Late Arrival and early dismissal: Students should arrive and leave in a quiet manner as to not disturb the class j. Movement in hallways: Students should go about in the hallways quietly and if the class is all there it should be a quiet straight line with faces to the front k. Storing personal belongings: Personal belongings will be stored if their backpacks and cubbies l. Taking attendance: Attendance will be taken during the morning, before/after lunch, and before dismissal. It will also be taken throughout the day to make sure very is around and a face-to-name-count will be used to ensure accuracy and safety m. Using the classroom sink, if there is one: If there is a classroom sink, only one child at a time shall be allowed to use it and only be used when appropriate n. Using the pencil sharpener: The pencil sharpener will only be used by the teacher or when the teacher allows the student, but it will not be done during any lessons in case to cause a distraction o. Using the teacher’s desk: No students will be allowed to use a teacher’s desk unless allowed and supervised p. Using the water fountain: The water fountain will only be allowed when the class is not in the middle of a lesson and if the student doesn’t have a water bottle in the classroom q. Using other materials and equipment: Students need to know where, when, and how to store, retrieve, and care for items in the classroom. Items for the classroom will be neatly and safely arranged and the procedures for the use of everything will be clearly stated to the children. r. Wearing hats and other articles of clothing in the classroom: Any extra pieces of clothing won’t be allowed to be worn during class but if they would like it during recess that is fine. Having anything extra is just a chance for being a distraction s. What to do in an emergency situation: During an emergency everyone shall remain calm and quiet and wait for instructions from a teacher t. When a visitor comes into the classroom: When a visitor comes to the classroom the students should understand what behavior is expected from them and to remain on task unless I direct them otherwise 9. Describe the class or morning opening, the class or days closure: The class morning will be outgoing and upbeat as children have lots of energy which tends to die off at the end of the day so the most important things to get done that day will go first. The end of the day will be a bit more relaxed as the students have been in school all day and their brains are starting to turn off so it will just be more reviewing and hands on work to keep them active and going.
Managing the Curriculum:
10. Describe how you will help the children with their organization and assignments: I will help the children with their organization and assignments by always having things labeled for what goes where and keeping their folders for homework and home notifications organized. I will also help students learn how to use a planner so they can learn to organize their schoolwork and what they have themselves too to help for the future. 11. Describe your homework expectations. Will there be homework? How much and how often? Will parents and guardians be in-formed? If so, how? What is their involvement to be? Is there a homework hotline? I will give little homework assignments for children to do at home with their parents if they need help. Any work that is given out during the week though for homework won’t be due until the following Monday from that prior week so if needed the children could do the homework over the weekend if they had to wait for help. Parents/guardians will be informed when homework is being given by the beginning of every month by a calendar, so they know to look out for it. As for a homework hotline there won’t be a number, but the parents are always welcome to email any questions/concerns. 12. Describe your procedure for incomplete, unacceptable, or incorrect student work. Is there a recovery option? For any incomplete, unacceptable, or incorrect student work I will always give the student another chance but first I will sit down with them and help find the reasoning on why it wasn’t finished or if they are struggling with any part of it. Once it hits over the unit chapter though any work that isn’t fixed will still be allowed to be handed in but won’t be counted for a grade. 13. Do you plain to provide comments, feedback, or corrections on student work? I will always provide comments, feedback, or corrections on my students work as I feel they need to learn whether they are fully understanding the material or if they need more help. If I do think they need more help I want them to know that they can come to me because I want to help them. 14. Will you use marks of some sort-grades, value words, figures, and so forth? I will not be using grades on the children’s schoolwork in my class but rather value words and stickers. I think grades label a student on their work and I never want any child to be discouraged. 15. Will students be rewarded for their group work? How will you assess group learning? How will you assess individual learning from group work? Students will be rewarded verbally for their group work but unless there is a grade for it as in part of their project, there won’t be any prize for just being able to work with a group. I will assess group learning by assessing their process and not just their product. I will also have students assess their selves in their group work to know how they think they did themselves. I will also assess individual learning from group work by keeping track on which students are working on which parts, so I know how much they contributed and to what extent. 16. Describe the student portfolio expectation. Where will the portfolios be stored? When will students work on their portfolios? Every student in the classroom will have their own portfolio which will be stored in a group cubby. Inside every one of them there will be an array of different work from different subjects that show the students strengths but also their weaknesses. Students will have access to these portfolios in case they ever want to look back on something and they will also contribute to what work and they will want to be in it. Lastly, they students will also be able to create their own cover for the front of it so it is personalized. 17. Describe your plan for communication with parents/guardians. Parent/guardian communication is very important so what I will do is, monthly I will send home a overall report on how the student is doing and where I think they excel on and where I think more attention is needed. Report cards are only given out 4 times a year so I want the parent/guardian to know more throughout the year so they can help out at home. This is also a chance for parents to ask any questions or concerns they may have with their childs learning.
Maintaining Classroom Relations and Personal Behavior:
18. Describe how you will bring an off-task child back on task. Knowing which children are ones who stay on task very easily or off is important in the classroom. For a child who gets off-task very easily I will make sure to be close to them so I can help keep them on task and remind them, but also not force the work upon them and if they need a break and come back to it later that is okay. 19. Describe how students will know what is and what is not an appropriate level of classroom noise. Students will know what is and what is not appropriate level of classroom noise by the first day of class of what level I except them at. I will also use a clapping method when the noise level is way too high, and I need their attention to either quiet down or move onto the next activity. 20. Describe how you will signal a need for hands and when, if ever, is it okay to call out without using hands. In my classroom it will never be okay to call out unless directed too. Hand raising will always be used in the classroom when answering any questions or having any questions. I will signal I would like for students to raise hands by asking after finishing what I am talking about or finish asking a question for students to raise their hand quietly to be picked on. 21. Describe how you will indicate your support for appropriate student behavior. I will indicate my support for appropriate student behavior by complimenting the student in front of the other classmates so that way other students see what I am expecting and hopefully join in. 22. Describe how you will discourage inappropriate student behavior. I will discourage any inappropriate student behavior by reminding the student of what is expected from them and if continued consequences will take place. I will also tell other students to continue doing what they are doing so the student acting out doesn’t encourage any other students to join. 23. Describe your order of indirect and direct behavior intervention strategies. My order of indirect behavior intervention strategies is eye-contact with that student, hand gestures, picture cues, or whatever way gets their attention and stops that behavior before having to actually talk to the student. My direct behavior intervention strategies are verbal reminders, putting reminders of class rules around the classroom, helping the student learn appropriate problem-solving behaviors and ways to manage their feelings/actions. 24. Describe how you will signal your need for attention from the class and from a distracted student. I will signal my need for attention from the class and from a distracted student by asking them to “give me 5”. Meaning once they have put their eyes on me, ears are listening, lips are quiet, hands are still, and feet are quiet to raise the hand. This way I know the entire class is listening and paying attention when it is needed. 25. Describe how you will respond when two errant behaviors are happening simultaneously but at opposing locations in the classroom. I will respond when two errant behaviors are happening simultaneously by at opposing location in the classroom by stopping both of them and then assessing the situations and giving consequences if needed. Stopping the behaviors is the most important thing to do first because of safety and then take action.
When the Going Gets Tough:
26. Describe your pattern of escalating consequences. The way I will escalate consequences in my classroom is first I will give the student a reminder, if that does not work then the student will receive a time out/ miss time doing a fun activity, and last if those both don’t work then I will notify the principle and the child’s parent/guardian. 27. Describe how you will deal with disrespectful, inappropriate comments from students: I will deal with disrespectful, inappropriate comments from students by first of all not taking anything personally because they are just children. Secondly, I will stop the student from continuing and find the reasoning for the comment being made. Lastly, I will take action whether they are just being talked to or if further consequences need to be taken. 28. Describe how you will respond to remarks that are sexist or racist or thar stereotype people in inappropriate and cruel ways: I will respond to remarks that are sexist, racist, or stereotyping people in inappropriate/ cruel ways by first stopping the behavior. Then I will discuss with the student what they are doing is wrong and have them apologize to anyone it affected or hurt. Lastly if the child will receive some type of consequence because those actions will not be tolerated in the classroom. 29. Describe how you will respond to serious and dangerous student behaviors: I will respond to serious and dangerous student behavior by first stopping the behavior the child is doing for their safety and everyone else’s. Secondly, I will pull the student to the side and discuss why what they were doing is dangerous and how it can affect them and others. Lastly, I will give the student consequences for their actions as they need to learn from their actions and to not do it again. 30. Identify one person you can go to for support: The principle
