Between God's Eyelashes I Look at You

By Jose Garcia Villa

Between God's eyelashes I look at you,

Contend with the Lord to love you,
In this house without death I break His skull
I ache, I ache to love you.

I will batter God's skull God's skull God's skull!

I will batter it till He love you
And out of Him I'll dash I'll dash
To thy coasts, O mortal flesh.

He'll be broken He'll be broken He'll be broken

By my force of love He'll be broken
And when I reach your side O Eve
You'll break me you'll break me you'll break me.
Commentary on Authorial Style

Jose Garcia Villa’s Between God’s Eyelashes I look at You is a 3-stanza poem with 4 lines each
stanza. The topic of the poem is love and it is in lyrical form. When I research about this poem to
have a wide and deeper understanding, it seems like this poem is not that known because I only
saw 2-3 references about this poem. It is said that this poem is an erotic poem.

The poet’s word choice is simple. All the words are not complex. I did notice modifier used in the
poem. The theme of the poem is love that is manifested in the physical aspects of sex. Jose Garcia
Villa used oblique words rather than direct to point out the erotic message of the poem. The poet
used words such as “skull” and the magic “God.” which are said to be erotic symbols. Some would
consider his word choice shocking since he used the word “God” as an erotic symbol. Some may
even consider it taboo for using God as the image of sex. The words are not subtle and restrained.

The poem is written in first person point of view. The point of view thus, gives an impact to the
way the poem is read. I find some sentences in the poem rather odd, there are repeated short
sentences. The sentences in each line are short and punchy. And some lines do have more than one
sentence.

The first lines of the second and third stanzas sound hysterical rather than emphatic and intense.
The poet seems to be very intimate and passionate and yet angry, on the way he delivers the words.
At the beginning of the poem, the poet seems to be very calm and spoke the words of love but in
the middle of the poem the tone seems to shift and by the end it shifted back into calm tone again.

I do think that the poet used Stylistic Devices in the poem like Anaphora wherein I noticed lines
that start with the same words “I will batter God's skull God's skull God's skull! I will batter it till
He love you”. Next is the Hyperbole in which it effectively draws the attention to a message that
the poet wants to emphasize in this line “By my force of love He'll be broken”. Another one is
Metonymy, the first stanza’s third line “In this house without death…” seems an expression that
closely associates the word “heaven” since there is also a reference of the word “God” and “Eve”.
And lastly, Repetition is also noticeable in lines: “I ache, I ache to love you.”, “I will batter God's
skull God's skull God's skull!”, “And out of Him I'll dash I'll dash”, “He'll be broken He'll be
broken He'll be broken”, and “ You'll break me you'll break me you'll break me.”.
All these elements bring a major contribution to the poem. The word choice careful choices of
what words they use affect the rhythm of a line. The way Villa used punctuations and
capitalizations affect the flow and meaning of the poem. With Figurative language, I did have a
better understanding of the poem. The stanzas and lines give emphasis to the content and the
message being sent is given importance. Overall, all the factor and elements in a poem bring a big
contribution on how readers read, feel and understand the poem.
