2021-Assignment-1 (Updated)

This document outlines an assignment with 4 questions about fluid and particle processes. It provides details on the flow conditions, pipe dimensions, fluid properties, and settling chamber dimensions for each question. Students must answer all 4 questions on A4 paper and submit by April 2nd. The questions involve calculating downstream pressure given upstream pressure and flow rate, determining maximum flow rate, sizing an oxygen supply hose, determining flow pattern and pressure drop in a multi-fluid pipe, and calculating particle collection efficiencies and required flow rates in a settling chamber.

CHEN 3009/5042 Fluid and Particle Processes - 2021 S1

(Due date: 4pm 2 April, Friday)

Assignment 1 (Students can be grouped up to 4 people for CHEN3009 and 2
people for CHEN5042)

Answer all FOUR questions using A4 paper, and submit the scanned copy to Blackboard
before 4pm 2 Apr, Friday.

1. Air is flowing at 300 K through a 150 mm diameter and 50 m length pipeline made of
commercial steel (ε=0.05 mm) under polytropic conditions with k=1.4. (air viscosity is 0.018
×10-3 Pa s; air molecular weight: 29 g/mol) [25 marks]
(1) If the flow rate of air is 0.3 kg/s, determine the downstream pressure when the pressure drop
along the pipeline is 60% of the upstream pressure. Assume the ideal gas law applies.
(2) If the upstream pressure is 200 kPa, what is the maximal air flow rate that can achieved in
the pipeline?

2. Oxygen is supplied isothermally to an astronaut through an umbilical hose that is 7 m long. The
pressure in the oxygen tank is 200 kPa at a temperature of 10 ºC, and the pressure in the space
suit is 20 kPa. If the umbilical hose has an equivalent roughness of 0.01 mm, what should the
hose diameter be to supply oxygen at a rate of 0.05 kg/s? (The viscosity of O2 is 2.0 × 10-5 Pa s)
[25 marks]

3. Air and water flow at 8×10-3 kg/s and 0.4 kg/s, respectively, in a horizontal steel tube of internal
diameter D = 40 mm and length L =1 km. The fluids are at temperature of 20 ºC and the
expansion of the air may be assumed to be isothermal. The inlet pressure is 10 bar. Determine
the flow pattern and the pressure drop. (a = 18×10-6 Pa s; w = 0.9×10-3 Pa s) [25 marks]

4. The settling chamber (with dimensions H = 3m, L = 10m, W = 2m), shown schematically in the
following figure, is used as a primary separation device in the removal of dust particles of
density 1500 kg/m3 from a gas of density 0.7 kg/m3 and viscosity 1.90×10-5 Pa s. [25 marks]
(1) What is the upper limit of particle size for which Stokes’ law applies?
(2) Determine the collection efficiency for spherical particle of diameter 30 μm when the
volumetric flow rate of gas is 0.9 m3/s.
(3) If the same settling chamber is used to removal the spherical particle of diameter 100 μm,
what is the required volumetric flow rate to achieve a collection efficiency of 80%?
