Science 5 Las Week 3

This document is a science learning activity sheet about materials that block, absorb, or transmit light. It contains background information that opaque objects block light, translucent objects allow some light to pass through, and transparent objects allow all light to pass through. There are two activities - the first asks students to identify materials as transparent, translucent, or opaque, and the second is a multiple choice quiz about these concepts. The sheet also includes an answer key and spaces for student reflection.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Relate the Ability of the Material to Block, Absorb or Transmit Light to Its Use

Background Information for Learners

The main source of light on Earth is the Sun. Light or visible light is
electromagnetic radiation within the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that
can be perceived by the human eye. Visible light is usually defined as having
wavelengths. To understand light further, we have to study the ability of certain
material to block, absorb or transmit light. Light from the source falls on the object
and travels to our eyes that’s why light help us see objects however it depends on
the materials that block, absorb or transmit light to its use.

Opaque objects block light from traveling through them. Most

materials are opaque. When light strikes an opaque object none of it passes
through. Most of the light is either reflected by the object or absorbed and
converted to heat. Materials such as wood, stone, and metals are opaque to visible
light. Translucent objects allow some light to travel through them. Materials
like frosted glass and some plastics are called translucent. Transparent objects
allow light to travel through them or allow the transmission of light waves
through them. Materials like air, water, and clear glass are called transparent.
Glass, for example, is transparent to all visible light. The color of a transparent
object depends on the color of light it transmits.
