Constant-Fill Turbo Couplings With Valve Control

1) Voith turbo couplings are used to start underground conveyors reliably under harsh conditions. They help conveyors start smoothly even when loaded or during voltage drops. 2) The couplings work by storing operating fluid in a delay chamber during motor startup. This reduces torque transferred to the conveyor until the motor reaches operating speed. Larger delay chambers provide more relief and thermal storage. 3) Valves control the draining and refilling of operating fluid between the delay chamber and operating chamber. This allows the couplings to provide starting torque relief, share loads across multiple motors, and restart smoothly even during overloads or voltage drops.

put tension in the chain

AFCs used in underground applications have to be extremely

robust and need to operate reliably under harshest conditions.
They are driven by squirrel-cage motors, whose dipped charac-
teristic curve is quite unfavourable for starting
machinery with constant torque, such as conveyors. Loaded or
even overloaded conveyors require a break-away
torque that is many times higher than the nominal torque.
Occasionally, the load on underground power supply
systems is so high that voltage drops occur. In this case
the existing torque is lower than that required if the
#conveyor is utilised to full capacity.

Trouble-free operation means your drive

system has to fulfil a number of demands:

■ High starting frequency and clockwise

and counter clockwise start-ups of loaded or
overloaded conveyors

■ Jolt-free built-up of starting torque to protect

the entire drive line, in particular the chain

■ Load sharing between drive units with

multi-motor drives

Voith constant-fill turbo couplings types TVF, TVVF,

TVVSF meet the requirements for starting-up
AFC conveyor drives in every respect. They are
usually mounted on the transmission input shaft
and connected with the drive motor by means of
an elastic connecting coupling. The turbo coupling
is situated in a bell housing which links motor
and gearbox.
If the gearbox bearing is not designed to carry
the respective mass of the turbo coupling, special
designs are available. In this case, the coupling
can be mounted directly onto the motor shaft
or in order to ensure uniform load on the two
components is suspended on disc-pack couplings
between motor and transmission.

Brilliantly simple –
With unique advantages

The tough conditions in underground mining demand a maximum in

reliability of all components. With constant-fill Voith turbo couplings
these demands are met by their simple and compact design as well
as their high product quality. State-of-the-art production facilities and
our quality assurance system per DIN ISO 9001 are the basis for this.
Unique benefits
of Voith turbo couplings
in AFC drives:

■ Compact, simple product design

■ Easy installation, removal and service

■ Utilisation of economically
priced robust and reliable squirrel-cage
motors possible

■ Relieved run-up of motor even

in the event of a voltage drop ■ Design in line with ex-protection standard 94/9/EC

■ Utilisation of motor pull-out torque ■ Protection of all drive components,

in particular of the chain, due to shock-free
■ Automatic load sharing build-up of starting torque
in case of multi-motor drives due to
natural characteristic curve ■ Bi-directional operation with identical properties

■ No need for peripheral devices, ■ High thermal capacity allows high

controls or similar frequency of start-ups while
characteristics remain unchanged
■ Utilisation of Voith-specified fluids
for hydrodynamic power transmission, ■ Virtually wear-free power transmission,
e.g. mineral oil, HFD or water no mechanical contact between runners

■ Proven designs for water and ■ Excellent shock and vibration damping

Load relief during start and overload –
Valve controlled turbo couplings

The hydrodynamic transmission of power inside a turbo coupling

occurs via a fluid flow. It transports the mechanical energy that has
been converted into fluid energy in the pump wheel into the turbine wheel
where it is reconverted into mechanical energy to drive the conveyor.
Depending on their arrangement, size, type of fill and drain control, the
surrounding storage chambers for operating fluid offer
numerous possibilities of influencing the coupling characteristics.

Type TVF offers excellent soft start and thermal storage capacity.
This is further improved in type TVVF as a result of an enlarged
delay chamber. Type TVVFS offers the highest degree of
start-up relief with an extra storage space in the coupling hous-
ing in addition to the enlarged delay chamber.

Overcoming poor voltage with ease –
With Voith turbo couplings

A voltage drop during the start-up process represents a particularly

unfortunate coincidence. Without a valve-controlled Voith coupling,
voltage recovery and available torque would deteriorate considerably. The
conveyor can no longer be started. Consequence: Thermal overload of mo-
tor and/or coupling.
