The present continuous (also called present progressive) is a verb tense which is used to show
that an ongoing action is happening now, either at the moment of speech or now in a larger

the near future. Read on for detailed descriptions, examples, and present continuous exercises.

III-PRESENT CONTINUOUS FORMS: 2- Present Continuous Uses
USE 1 Now
In English, "now" can mean: this second, today, this month, this
year, this century, and so on. Sometimes, we use the present continuous to say that we are in the
process of doing a longer action which is in progress; however, we might not be doing it at this exact
second.
Examples: (All of these sentences can be said while eating dinner in a restaurant.)
I am meeting some friends after work. * I am not going to the party tonight.
Is he visiting his parents next weekend? * Isn't he coming with us tonight?

TEMA: II- THE PAST CONTINUOUS
VII - We use the past continuous to talk about the past: For something
which happened before and after another action:
1-The children were doing their homework when I got home.
Compare: The children did their homework when (= after) I got home.
This use of the past continuous is very common at the beginning of a story:
The other day I was waiting for a bus when … Last week, as I was driving to work, …
for something that happened before and after a specific time:
It was eight o'clock. I was writing a letter.
3-We do not normally use the past continuous with stative verbs. We use the past simple instead:
When I got home, I really needed (NOT was needing) a shower.
VIII- QUIZ USING THE PAST CONTINUOUS : Choose the right combinations of words to
complete the sentences. In some cases, there is more than one correct answer.
