Quarter 2 – Module 4:
Identifying Point of View

NAME: _____________________________________

Point of view is the narrator’s perspective in telling a story. Depending on who the narrator is, he/she will be
standing at one point and seeing the action. This idea will give the narrator a partial or whole view of events as they
happen. Many stories have the protagonist telling the story, while in others, the narrator may be another character
or an outside viewer, a narrator who is not in the story at all. The narrator should not be confused with the author,
who is the writer of the story and whose opinions may not be those written into the narrative.

What is point of view? The point of view tells you how the narrator is connected to the story.
 There are three main points of view:
In first-person, the narrator is a character in the story. First-person narrators use first-person pronouns, such
as I, we, me, us, my, our, mine, and ours.
Example: My brother’s name is Robert.

 In second-person, the narrator makes the reader a character in the story. Second-person narrators use
second-person pronouns, such as you, your, and yours.
Example: You are my best friend.

 In third-person, the narrator tells the story as an outside observer. This observer often knows what the
characters are thinking third-person narrators use third-person pronouns, such as he, she, they, him, her,
their, his, hers, and theirs as well as characters’ names.
Example: Jasmine picked apples with her friends, Louise and Camille.
