Bode Plot

The bode plot consists of two plots that show the frequency response of a system's transfer function: 1) A magnitude plot shows the magnitude in decibels versus angular frequency in logarithmic scale. 2) A phase plot shows the phase angle in degrees versus angular frequency in logarithmic scale. To sketch a bode plot, you convert the transfer function to bode form, find the corner frequencies, list them with the corresponding slope changes, and calculate the gain at different frequencies to plot the magnitude response.

BODE PLOT

15 May 2020 1
INTRODUCTION
BODE PLOT :
The bode plot is the frequency response plot of a transfer function of a
system.

It consists of 2 plots :
1) Magnitude plot G(j) MAGNITUDE
2) Phase angle plot in db PLOT

1) Magnitude plot:
The magnitude plot is a graph between magnitude of log
system transfer function in decibel and angular frequency

Angle of
G(j) PHASE ANGLE
PLOT
2) Phase plot:
The phase plot is a graph between phase angle of the
system transfer function in degrees and angular frequency. log 

Both the plots are plotted on a common of X axis in which the G(j) frequencies expressed in
logarithmic scale.
PROBLEMS ON BODE PLOT

Sketch the bode plot for the following transfer function and determine
a) Gain margin
b) Phase margin
c) Gain crossover frequency
d) Phase crossover frequency
Given G(S) = 80
S(S+2)(S+20)

SOLUTION:

STEP 1 : Convert the transfer function into bode form or time constant form.
G(S) = 80
2S(S/2+1)20(S/20+1)
G(S) = 2
S(0.5S+1)(0.05S+1)

STEP 2 : Obtain sinusoidal transfer function by replacing S by j in the given S

domain transfer function.
G(S) = 2
j(0.5j+1)(0.05j+1)
STEP 3 : Find the corner frequencies.
c1 = 1/T1 = 1/0.5 = 2rad/sec
c2 = 1/T2 = 1/0.05 = 20rad/sec
STEP 4 : List the corner frequencies in the increasing order and prepare a table as shown
below.
TERMS CORNER SLOPE IN CHANGE IN
FREQUENCY Db/sec SLOPE IN
IN RAD/SEC Db/sec
2/(j)^2 -20dB/sec
1/(0.5j+1) c1=2rad/sec -20dB/sec -40dB/sec
1/(0.05j+1) c2=20rad/ -20dB/sec -60dB/sec
sec

STEP 5 : Choose an arbitrary frequency  L which is less than the lower corner
frequency and M which is greater then higher corner frequency.
 L = 0.1rad/sec
 M = 100rad/sec
STEP 6 : Calculate the gain in dB in every corner frequency one by one by using this
formula.

At  = L
A in Db : | | |
AL = 0.1 = 20log 2/w =20log 2/0.1 |
A0.1 = 26.02  26dB

At  =  C1
A in Db : A=2 = 0.1 = 20log |2/2| = 0
A2= 0dB

At  = C2
AC2 = Slope from  c1 to C2 log (c2/c1) + AC1
