2: Week 2:

SOLVING WORD PROBLEM INVOLVING PERCENTAGE AND

VISUALIZING, NAMING AND DESCRIBING POLYGONS
Let’s Recall (Review)

A. Tell whether the missing term in each mathematical expression is base, rate or
percentage. Write your answer on the blank before each number.
___________1. 27 is what percent of 75?
___________2. What is 35% of 60?
___________3. What percent of 70 is 21?
___________4. 40% of 20 is what number?
___________5. 75% of what number is 40?

Lesson 1: Solves routine and non-routine problems involving

percentage using appropriate strategies and tools. (M5NS-IIIb)
140

Let’s Understand
Let us study the problem.

The regular price of a bicycle is P14 000. On a sale day, Mr. Santos bought it at a
discount of 20%.
 How much was the discount given to Mr. Santos?
 How much did he pay for the bicycle?

Solution: Follow the steps in solving word problem:

 Understand the problem
 The problem asks for the following:
a. the discount given to Mr. Santos
b. the price paid for the bicycle
 The data or facts given are:
P14 000 – regular price of the bicycle
20% -discount given
 Make a plan
Discount is a percentage of the original price.
To find the discount or percentage, use the formula below.

Discount/Percentage = base x rate

P=B x R

To find the discounted price, subtract the discount from the original price.

 Carry out the plan

P= B x R
P= 14 000 Amount of discount
X 0.20 or percentage
P2 800.00

1
Regular price of the bicycle P14 000 To know the amount paid,
Discount – P 2 800 subtract the discount from
Amount paid by Mr. Santos P11 200 the original or regular price.

 Check if the answer makes sense

Add the discount and the amount paid for the bicycle. It should be equal to the
regular price.
Discount – P2 800
Amount paid– P11 200
Regular Price- P14 000

Here is another example:

A school gymnasium has a seating capacity of 6800. During an event, it is 90% full,
how many seats were occupied?

6800 Number of seats

P= B x R X 0.90
6120.00 or 6120
occupied

Remember that Interest, discount, and commission are amount of money

expressed as a percentage of the original amount.

Let’s Apply
Solve the problems. Write your answer on your answer sheet.

1. Mrs. Reyes has P15 000 in the bank. The interest rate is 5% per year. How
much interest will he get after one year?

2. There are 24 books in the Reading Corner. Of these, 25% are English books.
How many English books are there?

3. Mr. Soriano saves 15% of his salary every month. If his monthly salary is
P24 600, how much does he save in a month?

Let’s Analyze

Follow the steps in solving word problem. Write your answers on your answer sheets.

1. Mary answered 25% of her assignment in the school. How many more items will she have
to answer at home if her assignment is 40 items?

2. Jose drank 30% of a bottle of orange juice in the morning. If it contains 350ml, how much
orange juice was left?

Lesson 2: Visualizes, names, describes and draws polygons
with 5 or more sides (M5GE-IIIc-19)

Let’s Understand
Polygon
A polygon is a closed figure where the sides are all line segments. These sides meet
at common endpoints called vertices. All line segments lie in one plane.

Here are some polygons with 5 or more sides. Name each and count the number of sides.

Pentagon Hexagon Heptagon Octagon

Nonagon Decagon Undecagon Dodecagon

How many sides are there in each polygon?

Count the number of vertices in each polygon.
How many vertices are there in each polygon?
What can you say about the sides of the polygons?
Are the sides connected?

Let’s Apply
A. Name each polygon and then tell the number of sides and vertices.

Name _________ _________ _________ ________

No. of sides _________ _________ _________ ________
No. of vertices _________ _________ _________ ________

B. Draw the given polygons on the dotted boxes.

1. Nonagon 2. Hexagon 3. Decagon

3
Let’s Analyze

A. Identify each polygon in the following figure and then describe each as to the number of
sides and vertices.

Name of No. of sides No. of

Polygon vertices
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
