Migrate from Gmail or webmail to Google Workspace


This migration guide helps you and your users import email, calendar, and contact data from Gmail or webmail
providers to Google Workspace. Use this guide if your organization previously used one of these webmail
providers:

• A webmail provider that uses the IMAP protocol, such as 1&1 IONOS, AOL, Apple iCloud, Bluehost, GoDaddy,
Yahoo!, or Zoho
• Another Google Workspace account
• A personal Gmail (@gmail.com) account
Note: For RFC 3501-compliant enterprise IMAP servers, go to Migrate from IMAP servers to Google Workspace.

You can help your users migrate their old mail, but users need to import incoming email, calendars, and contact
data themselves.

Step 1: Instruct users to forward their incoming email


Forwarding new mail helps make sure your users receive messages sent to their old account during and after the
move to Google Workspace.

If your users previously had... Then tell them to…

@gmail.com or Google Workspace accounts Automatically forward Gmail messages to another


account

Webmail accounts other than @gmail.com or Google Search for how to automatically forward emails from
Workspace the webmail provider.

Step 2: Instruct users to impo their calendars and contacts


If your users want to... Then tell them to...

Import calendars from their old accounts to Google Import events to Google Calendar
Workspace

Import contacts from their old accounts to Google Import contacts to Google Contacts
Workspace

If you want to... Then use...

Help migrate your users’ mail to Google Workspace Data migration service
(and if their old accounts support IMAP).
Must be a super admin to use this product.
Only use this option if the IMAP-based server:
Note: When migrating from IMAP, Gmail, or Google
• Has a trusted TLS certi cate Workspace, the data migration service moves email
• Is accessible from Google services and label data only. The transfer doesn't include
calendar events and resources, contacts, Google
Drive les, Google Sites, or any other non-mail
content.

Allow your users to migrate their own email to The following 2-step method:
Google Workspace from their old accounts.
1. Allow your users to import data from non-Google
webmail providers to Gmail for Google
Workspace.

hosts on or off.

2. Instruct your users to set import options in Gmail.
