Text Features Lesson Plan

Background Information
Subject Area: Language Arts
Grade Level: 3rd/4th
Number of Students: 25
Allocated Time: 20 minutes, 4 rotations (including the lesson). 1 hour total

Goals/Rationale
Goal: The goal of the mini lesson is for the students to learn how to utilize different text features
to help them better understand what they read and the meaning of unknown words
Rationale: This is important because the students will be utilizing glossaries, indexes,
dictionaries, titles, etc., in their everyday lives to assist them in their reading

Teacher Objectives/Standard(s)
● Objectives: The students should be able to know how to effectively use different text
features to help them better understand what they read and the meaning of unknown
words
● Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.4.C Consult reference materials (e.g.,
dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and
determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases

Teacher Preparation
● I will need to know how all the different text features can be utilized effectively inside
and outside of the classroom and their purposes
● Materials: Google Slideshow, projector, computer, text feature article on RazKids,
informational books, Column Chart worksheets

Assessment Plans
● I will assess my students to make sure they have met the learning objectives by observing
how well they answer my questions and participate in the small group settings
● I will also check over their Column Chart worksheets and their RazKids quiz results

Instructional Procedures

Introduction
● After I finish my read aloud of our daily chapter book, I will display the reading rotations
on the board for the class to read
● There will be 3 assignments on the board for the students to complete:
1. Partner read an informational text of your choice

8
2. Read the assigned article on RazKids
3. Column Chart worksheet
● I will explain each rotation to the students and answer any questions they may have
● Each assignment is to be completed independently by the students (except partner read)
● While the students are working, I will call each group (one at a time) to my teacher table
for the mini-lesson
● Once the students finish an assignment, they will move onto the next assignment on the
list
● We have practiced the procedures several times and the students know that if they finish
early, they may read silently around the classroom

Presentation
● For the mini-lesson, I will present a Google Slideshow about text features
● For each slide, there is a description of each text feature, such as index, glossary,
diagram, etc.
● I will explain the purpose of each feature and how it will help them become better readers
● I will model and provide examples on each slide to help them better understand the
purpose(s) of each feature and how they can apply what they learned to real life
● Then, I will have them open some examples of informational books that I preselected
○ Each book is differentiated based on the reading level of the group I have at my
table
● I will check for understanding by constantly asking the students questions, observing how
well they are able to locate the features in their books, and by who is actively
participating
● To differentiate from the small group that encompasses the struggling readers in the class,
I have added many visual examples in the Google Slide to better help them find the
correct features in their informational books
● I will also be walking around every few minutes to make sure the rest of the class is on
task and to answer any questions

Closure
● To close the mini-lesson, I will reiterate in the last slide the importance of knowing how
to use these different text features properly
● I will answer any questions or misconceptions the students may have
● After all 3 rotations are finished, I will make sure I collected all the Column Chart
worksheets
● I will also check to see if each student completed the RazKids assignment and talk
individually with students who struggled on the assignment
● Once finished, we will then transition to the next part of our schedule
