Seismic Load Computation

The document summarizes the step-by-step process for calculating seismic load for a proposed four-story dwelling unit based on the National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015. It provides the seismic parameters and design coefficients needed for the calculation. It then calculates the total dead load, fundamental period of vibration, design base shear, vertical distribution of shear forces, and bending moments due to seismic forces at each floor level. A table summarizes the results of the seismic analysis.

Seismic Load Computation

Design procedures in seismic load computation are based from the National Structural

Code of the Philippines 2015, 7th Edition, Section 208. The step-by-step seismic load

computation for the proposed four-storey dwelling unit is presented below.

Seismic Parameters:
Occupancy Category
IV (Standard Occupancy Structures) (Table 103-1, NSCP 2015)
Soil Profile Type
SD (Table 208-2, NSCP 2015)
Seismic Importance Factor
I=1 (Table 208 – 1, NSCP 2015)
Seismic Zone Factor
z = 0.4 (Zone 4) (Table 208-3, NSCP 2015)
Seismic Source Type
Type C (Table 208-4, NSCP 2015)
Near Source Factor;
Na = 1.0 (Table 208-5, NSCP 2015)
Nv = 1.0 (Table 208-6, NSCP 2015)
Seismic coefficient;
Ca = 0.44Na (Table 208-7, NSCP 2015)
Cv = 0.64Nv (Table 208-8, NSCP 2015)
R = 8.5 (Table 208-11C, NSCP 2015)
Frame Material Factor;
Ct = 0.0731 (Section 208.5.2.2, NSCP 2015)
Dead Load:
Ground Floor = 5406.23 kN
Second Floor = 5455.69 kN
Third Floor = 5455.69 kN
Fourth Floor = 5455.69 kN
Roof Deck = 2440.92 kN
Total Dead Load = 24214.24 kN

Base Shear Computation: Section 208.5.2.2 Structural Period – Method A

Fundamental Period of Vibration:
T = Ct (hn)3/4 ;Ct = 0.0731

T = 0.0731 (13.3) ¾

T = 0.5091 seconds < 0.7 seconds ; therefore Ft = 0

Total Design Base Shear:

Cv I (0.64)(1)(1)
V actual = (W ) = ( 24214.24 ) = 3581.18 kN
RT (8.5)(0.5091)

Total Design Base Shear need not exceed:

2.5CaI (0.25)(0.44)(1)(1)
V max = ( W )= ( 24214.24 ) = 3133.61 kN
R ( 8.5)

Design Base Shear shall not be less than:

V min =0.11 C a IW = 0.11 (0.44)(1)(1) ( 24214.24 ) = 1171.97 kN

0.8 znvI (0.8)(0.4)(1)(1)

V min = (W ) = ( 24214.24 ) = 911.60 kN
R ( 8.5)

Therefore, use V = 3133.61 kN

Vertical Distribution of Forces:

Fx= n

( 3133.61−0 ) (16218.77)
F i 1= ¿ 259.32 kN

Vx=Ft + Fx

V 5=0+519.07=519.07 kN

V 4 =519.07+1046.77=1565.84 kN

V 3=1565.84 +785.07=2350.91kN

V 2=2350.91+523.38=2874.29 kN

V 1=2874.29+259.32=3133.61 kN

Moment due to seismic:

M 5=519.07(3)=1556.20 kN .m

M 4 =519.07 ( 6 ) +1565.83(3)=7811.9 0 kN .m

M 3=519.07 ( 9 ) +1565.83 ( 6 ) +2350.91(3)=21119.31kN .m

M 2=519.07 ( 12 ) +1565.83 ( 9 ) +2350.91 ( 6 )+ 2874.29(3)=43049.60 kN .m

M 1=519.07 ( 13.3 ) +1565.83 ( 12 )+2350.91 ( 9 ) +2874.29 ( 6 ) +3133.61 ( 3 )=59132.84 kN .m
