belief, or political conviction.
THE BRITISH EMPIRE
What do you know about the British Empire?
At its peak the British Empire was the largest empire the world had ever known. It was said ‘the sun
never sets on the British Empire’ because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always
shining on at least one of its numerous colonies or subject nations. Its power and influence stretched
all over the globe for several centuries. For better or worse it had a massive impact on the history of
the world. In the 16th century Britain began to establish overseas colonies. By 1783, Britain had built
a large empire with colonies in America and the West Indies. By 1921, it has reached its territorial
peak.
Shameful aspects of the British Empire:
Many historians argue that you cannot examine the British Empire without examining the more
shameful aspects of Britain's past. Britain was heavily involved with the Transatlantic slave trade in
the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The British Empire also stripped many colonies and indigenous
peoples of their land and vibrant cultures. Colonisation also caused many deaths due to famine,
disease and violence.
