Pre-Stressed Concrete Design (TE 523) : Deflection of Prestressed Concrete Elements

1. A 8m prestressed concrete beam with a rectangular cross-section is prestressed using a parabolic cable. The document asks to calculate: - The short-term midspan deflection from prestress and self-weight. - The long-term midspan deflection from prestress, self-weight, and live loads, accounting for 20% loss of prestress and a creep coefficient of 1.8. 2. An I-section prestressed concrete beam with specified dimensions is prestressed by a 1000kN cable. The document asks to calculate: - The initial midspan deflection from prestressing only. - The initial midspan deflection from prestressing and self

Deflection of Prestressed Concrete Elements

Assignment Plate #4

Name: _______________________________
Course and Year: ______________________

1. A prestress concrete beam over 8m is of rectangular section 150mm wide & 300mm deep. The beam
is prestressed by a parabolic cable having an eccentricity of 75mm below the centroidal axis at the
center of the span and an eccentricity of 25mm above the centroidal axis at the support section. The
initial force in the cable is 350kN. The beam supports 3 concentrated loads of 10kN each at intervals
of 2m. Take Ec=38 kN/mm2 and Use Yc= 24kN/m3.

a. Neglecting the loss of prestress, determine the short-term deflection at midspan due to the prestress
and self-weight.

b. Allowing 20% of loss of prestress determine the long-term deflection at midspan due to prestress +
self-weight + live load assuming creep coefficient as 1.8.

2. A concrete beam with symmetrical I section has a flange width and depth of 200mm and 60mm,
respectively. The thickness of the web is 80mm and the overall depth is 400mm. The beam is
prestressed by a cable carrying a force of 1000kN. The span of the beam is 8m. The center line of the
cable is 150mm from the soffit of beam at center of span, linearly varying to 250mm at the support.

a. Compute the initial deflection at midspan due to prestress only. Take Yc = 24 kN/m3.

b. Compute the initial deflection at midspan due to prestress and self-weight of the beam assuming
Ec=38kN/mm2.
