Explain The Relationship Between Population Growth and Carrying Capacity. 2. Suggest Ways To Minimize Human Impact On The Environment

This weekly home learning plan for grade 10 students covers the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity, and ways to minimize human impact on the environment. The document discusses how populations grow until limited by available resources, at which point the population reaches carrying capacity. It provides examples of density-dependent and density-independent factors affecting populations. Students are asked to consider issues like overpopulation and habitat destruction in the Philippines and ways communities can protect local biodiversity. Assignments include analyzing environmental issues, explaining how biodiversity enables adaptation, and planning a community project to conserve the local environment.

WEEKLY HOME LEARNING PLAN

Grade 10
Week 8 Quarter 3
May 10 - 14, 2021

Learning Competency:
1. Explain the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity.
2. Suggest ways to minimize human impact on the environment.

Introduction:

English economist Thomas Malthus wrote an essay on the Principle of Population, which describes a
forthcoming population catastrophe. He said that populations grow geometrically. It means that population rate
will be doubled, whereas food supply increases arithmetically as the amount of land is finite. The resources such as
food, shelter, and water were natural limits to population growth. According to Malthus’ score principle, “Food is
essential for life.” Population increases faster than food; therefore, Malthus predicted that population would grow
until the demand of food supply is diminished, then there would be widespread scarcity. Now as we continue to
study biodiversity, let’s try to examine how population of organisms in an ecosystem affects biodiversity.

Learning Task 1.
Do you agree or disagree with the idea that “everyone has the right to have many children as they
want”? Why?

Development:

Population is a group of organisms of the same species that live in a certain area. There are many factors
that can cause a population size to change, and this includes:
1. Immigration is the transfer of individuals from one population to another population due to lack of
supply, and/or climate and weather condition.
2. Emigration is the transfer of individuals out of a population and into another.
3. Birth is the emergence of organisms into the outside world.
4. Death is the end of life of an organism.

Thus, if the birth rate is greater than the death rate, a population will grow. If the death rate is greater than
birth rate, then the population will decrease
While populations would probably to continue to grow in size, a population of organisms cannot grow forever-
its growth will be limited or stopped at some point, and death rate will be greater than the birth rate.

A population’s growth is limited by two general factors.

1. Density- independent factors. These are the limiting factors that can stop population from growing can
be such things as natural disasters, temperature, sunlight and the activities of humans in the
environment.
2. Density-dependent factors. These are the factors that come into play when population reaches a certain
number of organisms. For example, when population reaches a certain size, there won’t be enough
resources (food, shelter, water) for all the organisms.

Learning Task 2. Dependent or Independent?

Read each situation in the table below, then state if it is a density-independent or density-dependent.

Density-independent or
Situation
density-dependent?
Mrs. Rosales has 55 students in her Biology class, but she has room for 50.
Because the room was crowded, the 5 students were asked to go to the
curriculum chairperson to change their schedules.
Dinoflagellates in Laguna de Bay increase in population due to an increase in
organic substance in the body of water brought by water pollution.
The oil spill in Cavite area harmed many aquatic organisms in the vicinity.
A new strain of Dengue virus breaks out in the country.
Super typhoon Yolanda caused many residents to leave Leyte.
Population of wild boar decreases because of deforestation.
An increase in population of house lizards in Barangay Himpot causes a
decrease in population of mosquitoes.

What is carrying capacity?

Carrying capacity refers to the number of individuals who can be supported in a given area within natural
resource limits, and without degrading the natural social, cultural and economic environment for present and
future generations

When resources are unlimited, populations exhibit exponential growth, resulting in a J-shaped curve.
When resources are limited, populations exhibit logistic growth. In logistic growth, population expansion decreases
as resources become scarce. It levels off when the carrying capacity of the environment is reached, resulting in an
S-shaped curve.
Before the population reaches its carrying capacity, it experiences a period of rapid growth. This period
growth is called exponential population growth. During this period, there are plenty of resources available for all
organisms, so more births are recorded than deaths in organisms.

Learning Task 3.
Study the chart about the habitat where cow population has reached its carrying capacity and answer the
following questions.

Guide Question:
1. What have you noticed with the population of cow between May and June?
2. What do you think may have cause this situation?
3. What happened with the population of cow from July to September?
4. What may have cause this situation?

Environmentlal Issues and Problems

The Philippines is considered as one of the biologically richest country in the world in terms of its high
biodiversity . Our country have rich biological resources both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem, but we are losing
this global heritage due to habitat destruction, hunting, deforestation, overpopulation, global warming and
introduction of invasive species. As our forests are destroyed at a fast rate, the natural habitats which are dwelling
places for plant and animal species are also lost.
Human activities have created a positive and negative impacts on the environment. Human are therefore
obliged to take responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy state of the ecosystem, since this will reflect on
the future situation of the earth. Hence, in view of these harmful activities, our country is also noted in the world
as a hot spot for conservation and protection of species.

Learning Task No.4 ANALYZING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Direction: Analyse the following situations, then identify the effect/s it will have on the ecosystem

Environmental Issues Effects on the environment

1. Farmlands are converted into housing
projects
2. River ecosystem dumped with garbages from
illegal settlers and toxic wastes from
industries
3. Hunting of wild animals
4. Dynamite fishing
5. Burning of garbages

Engagement:

Performance Task No. 8: Change of Plan

Objective: Explain the importance of biodiversity in adaptation and survival of organisms.

Answer the following guide questions:

1. How has your community changed since the time you lived in your present environment?
2. What important issue/s is your community facing with regards to conservation and protection of local
biodiversity?
3. Why is the issue considered a problem or challenge in conserving the local biodiversity?
4. What can the people in your community do to help protect and conserve the local biodiversity?

Performance Task No. 9 I AM AN ECOWARRIOR!

Objective: To become an individual that has a great concern on the community/environment you live in.

Direction:
1. As an individual, think of a possible way that you can do to help the community or the environment.
2. Have the activity photographed as an evidence on what you are doing in the community (e.g., clean up
drive, gulayan sa tahanan or other advocacies)
