4.2 WORKING WITH LINEAR EXPONENTS
Exponent Laws
- Powers can always be represented as products, i.e.
an = a x a x a x a x a.... (n times)

1. Multiplying powers of the same base:

- keep the base, ________ the exponents ex. (a3)(a5) =

2. Dividing powers of the same base:

3. Raising the power of a power:

- keep the base, _______________ the exponents ex. (a2)3 =

4. Zero exponent:
- when a non-zero base is raised to the exponent 0, the result is _____. ex. a0 =

5. Negative exponent:
- when a non-zero base is raised to a negative exponent, the result is the _____________ of the base

as possible when evaluating powers.

4.3 WORKING WITH RATIONAL EXPONENTS

•Rational exponents are used to represent the nth root of a number. Thus,

• The radical form and the exponents form are interchangeable.

•The power of a radical can be written as:

•Rational exponents can be simplified using all laws of exponents, just like integer exponents.
