method is just to listen and
sometimes pen down some notes if
necessary during the lecture, combine
the information and organized it.
• In this method only the teacher talks,
the students are passive listeners and
they do not take any active part.

technique to keep the students
attentative in the classroom.
History and Background

• Historically the lecture can be traced back to the 5th century BC when it was
popular with the Greeks.
• The term lecture comes from the Latin lectare, to read aloud, which identifies it
as an expository or ‘telling’ method.

• Verbal
• Extra-verbal
• Non-verbal
• Visual
Lectures are given for several reasons, for example to:

• tell students what they need to know

• promote understanding and learning in depth
• provide an introduction to a topic
• stimulate student interest in a topic
Objectives

• To Clarify: This method is a group method. When large number of students need
clarification teacher can use this method.
• To extend content: Sometimes the discussion in the book is not sufficient so
teacher can use this method to clarify the concept of their students.
• Review: It is also useful for the recapitalization of the work of the students.
Planning a Lecture

• An effective lecture is composed of three components which includes Planning,

development and Conclusion.
• Planning: This step contains the instructional objectives to be achieved, amount
of content to be covered, feedback mechanism to be used and the kind of audio
visual aids to be used etc.
So planning a lecture boost the confidence of the teacher in handling the class.
Introduction: The main task of the teacher here is to establish link with students.
At this stage the teacher relates new topics to the one already taught and to the
previous experience.
Continue….

• Development phase: Transaction of ideas and information between the teacher

and the learner takes place at this stage. This is also called the presentation stage.
• Conclusion: This is the concluding phase here the teacher recapitulates whatever
he has explained. The teacher also asks few questions on the content matter in
order to evaluate to students understanding of the lecture.
Continue…

• It is difficult to be precise with regard to the allocation of time for each phase but as a guideline the
following is suggested:
Step 1
Prime time= 5 minutes
Step 2
Presentation= 21 minutes
Step 3:
Summarize= 6 minutes
Step 4:
Consolidate = 22 minutes
Step 5 =
Feed back= 6 minutes

• Student listening skills developed.
• Help to learn languages
• It is quit economical method.
• It is possible to handle large number of students at a time.
Demerits of Lecture Method

• In this method there is no place for learning by doing
• Attention level is not the same while student listening the lecture.
