Assignment 4 - Modified

The document provides instructions for implementing a differential NMOS common source amplifier in Electric CAD tool. Students are asked to design the amplifier with transistor widths and lengths corresponding to their ID number, set the bias point from a previous assignment, and perform transient analysis to calculate the small signal differential gain. They must also theoretically calculate the gain and compare it to the practical value. The submission should include the circuit schematic, characterization curves from the previous assignment, transient analysis plots, and comments on the gain values.

CAMPUS
First Semester 2015-2016
Assignment 4
Analog and Digital VLSI Design

Assignment Due Date: 25th November 2015, 5 PM Max Marks: 15M

Tools and files you need:
• Java
• Electric CAD tool “jar” file
• LTSPICE “scad.exe” file
• Technology ‘model’ file
Perform the following:
1. Implement the circuit for differential NMOS common source amplifier with resistive load of
50KΩ on both the outputs in Electric CAD tool.

The W and L for both transistors (M1 and M2) should be equal and be with respect to your
ID number which is explained as follows:

If ID number: 20XXXXXXX23H, then W = 2um and L =3um

If your ID number contains ‘0’ in the last two digits then consider ‘0’ as ‘10’. For example,
If ID number: 20XXXXXXX03H, then W = 10um and L = 3um. If ID number:
20XXXXXXX30H, then W = 3um and L = 10um
If the last two digits of your ID number are same, then W and L will be your last digit. For
example, If ID number: 20XXXXXXX55H, then W = L = 5um
If the last two digits of your ID number are zeroes, then consider W and L as 10um.

2. The bias point (Vbias) for both the transistors in differential amplifier will be the same as
obtained (for common source amplifier) in Assignment 3.

3. Procedure for choosing value of tail current source IDss: From the chosen bias point
(Vbias) you can calculate the saturation Drain Currents (IDM1: Check the appendix.) in the
common source amplifier of Assignment 3. Accordingly the tail current source value will
be IDss = 2*IDM1. (Choose DCcurrent source in electric).
4. With the chosen operating point, perform transient analysis (plot input (vin1-vin2) and
output (vout1-vout2) sinusoidal waveforms) for 3ms to check the amplifier characteristics.
Calculate the small signal differential gain (Av1 = (vout1-vout2)/(vin1-vin2)) from the input
and output waveforms. The AC voltage signal parameters are
The AC source signal values will be-
For transistor M1-
AC Voltage = vin1 = 100mV
DC Voltage = Bias voltage calculated in the previous assignment.
Delay = 1n or keep it with default value
Frequency = 1 KHz
For transistor M2 -
AC Voltage = vin2 = 200mV
DC Voltage = Bias voltage calculated in the previous assignment.
Delay = 1n or keep it with default value
Frequency = 1 KHz

5. The values of µ nCox and Vth for the model used are 139x10-6A/V2 and 0.7V respectively.
Now for the operating point calculate theoretical small differential signal gain (Av2).

6. Comment on the values of practical and theoretical small signal gains Av1, AV2.
The document should be well written and should contain the following
NAME and ID No.
Differential amplifier circuit schematic along with the W/L ratios used.

Transfer characteristics curve, Trans-conductance graph and Drain current curve for
common source amplifier of Assignment 3. Bias point for your case and IDM1 (drain
current) should be marked on the curve clearly like as shown below

 Transient analysis curves and

Comments on the small signal gains Av1, Av2

Caluclating tail current source for the differential amplifier

1. After drawing circuit for Common source amplifier with resistive load as in Assignment 3
(with DC input source only), run the simulation by going into tools->simulation (spice) -
>write spice deck.. It opens LTSPICE which looks as the figure shown below.

2. Draw the plots for Gm, Vout as mentioned in the previous assignment. The window now
looks something like this.

3. Right click on the waveform window and click on the “Add Trace” button which pop-ups
the signal selection window.
4. Now the graph looks something like this –

5. On this plot choose the bias point as done in the previous assignment and then mark the corresponding point
on the plot of IDM1. This will be the bias current of one NMOS transistor. Now multiply it with 2 and that
will be the value of current source you need to put in your differential amplifier. IDss = 2 *IDM1
