The Mini Pocket Translator is a useful device for trans-
lating from and into different languages.

1 x 3V battery, type CR2032 (included)

Warning!
Inserted batteries are for demonstration or test purposes.
There is therefore no guarantee that the batteries are fully
charged.

Safety note
DANGER for children
• Swallowing batteries could be fatal. Batteries
must be stored out of reach of small children.
• Swallowing a coin cell can lead to choking. If
this happens, consult a doctor immediately.

CAUTION - Damage to property


• Switch the device “OFF” before inserting the
battery.
• Only use the specified battery type.
• Ensure correct polarity.
• Check the battery regularly for leaks.
• If the device is not used for long periods of time,
remove the battery.
• When the battery is empty, please remove from
the device.
• Never short-circuit the connection poles.

Start up
Before commissioning, remove the plastic strip inserted
on the rear side of the calculator.

Inserting/replacing the battery


The device functions with one CR2032 3V coin cell. The
battery should be replaced every 12 months or when the
display becomes weak. To do this, remove the battery
case cover screws with a screw driver (PH0) and insert
a new battery with an identical power rating. Ensure
correct polarity.

After insertion, screw the battery case cover back on


tightly.

Turning the device on/off


Press the ON/OFF button to turn the device on or off.
The device turns off automatically around 5
minutes if no button has been pressed. If you turn the
device on shortly after it turns off
automatically, the Mini Pocket Translator returns
automatically to the previously selected function.

Setting the contrast


Press any language key (ENG, FRE, GER etc.) and the
selected language appears in the display. To set the con-
trast, press the ▼ key. The word CONTRAST appears.
Press the ▲/▼ keys, to select the contrast for the display.
Confirm your selection with the ENTER key.

Turning the key noise on/off


Press the MODE button twice, to access the
calculator function (CALCULATOR). “0.”
appears in the display. Afterwards, you can turn the key
noise on or off with the “B key”. The words “Keytone
ON”/ “Keytone OFF” appear temporarily in the display.

Functions
• Translation from and into different languages

• Calculator (Calculator, 10 digit display)

Selecting functions
• Press the MODE key to switch between the
different functions. The following functions
are available:
“TRANSLATOR” for the translating function,
“CALCULATOR” for the calculator function,
“GAME” for the game function and “RECALL”
for storing your own words and phrases.
• In the translating mode, press ENG for English,
FRE for French, GER for German, SPA for
Spanish, ITA for Italian and DUT for Dutch.

Entering your user name


Press any language key (ENG, FRE, GER etc.) and the
selected language appears in the display.
Press and hold the ▲ key for about four seconds and the
prompt NAME INPUT appears in the display. The first
free field appears for you to enter your name.
Now enter your name using the keypad and confirm
your entry with the ENTER key. The name can have a
maximum of 11 characters.

Translating words
• Press the MODE key or any language key.
If you use the MODE key, keep pressing it until
TRANSLATOR appears in the display.
• If you press one of the language keys, the
selected language mode appears directly in
the display. If you press GER for example,
GERMAN will appear in the display.
• Enter the word to be translated using the key pad
and confirm with the ENTER key. When the word
has been found in the memory, it appears in its
translated form in the display. If a word is not in
the memory, a similar word will automatically be
suggested.
• Press the ▲/▼ key to search for further possible
hits.
• Press a language key to show the selected
word in that language.

Retrieving and translating the stored phrases


• Press the PHR key to retrieve the phrases saved
(in the factory settings). First of all, the device
shows the phrase “GOOD MORNING”, which
will be displayed in the selected language.
• By pressing the ▲ or ▼ key, you can scroll
through the 102 stored phrases until you find the
one you want.
• Press one of the language keys (ENG, FRE, GER
etc.) to translate the phrase.
• If the phrase is longer than the number of
characters you can view in the display, you can

view the rest with the key.

Entering and storing single words and joining them


as phrases

The device can store single words to compose phrases. A


phrase can have a maximum of 14 words.

• Press the MODE key until TRANSLATOR


appears in the display. Alternatively, press one of the
language keys.
• If you press one of the language keys (ENG, FRE,
GER etc.), the selected language mode appears
directly in the display. If you press GER for
example, GERMAN will appear in the display.
• Enter the word to be translated using the key pad
and confirm with the ENTER key. If the word is
found in the memory, it appears in the display. If
a word is not in the memory, a similar word will
automatically be suggested.
• If the word entered is found in the memory, press
the SAVE key once. The procedure is the same for
all other words.
• To connect the words entered into a phrase, press
the SAVE key once after entering the last word.
When the last word reappears in the display, press
the SAVE key again. The message “LINKING”
appears in the display. This means that the
individual words have been combined into a
phrase. You can retrieve the stored phrases as
follows:

1) Press the MODE key to go to the menu.


2) Press the MODE key until “RECALL”
appears in the display. The first phrase saved
will then be displayed.
3) To translate the phrase press one of the
language keys.

Using the calculator


• The device has calculator functions
(CALCULATOR).
• Press the MODE key until “0.” appears in the
display.
• You can enter the calculation parameters using the
keypad.

Entering the exchange rate


• Press the “MODE” key until “0” appears in
the display.
• Press and hold the green “RATE” key for two
seconds until “RATE 1.” flashes in the display.
• Enter the exchange rate specific to your
country using the keypad and confirm with the
ENTER key.
• The exchange rate is now saved.
• The procedure is the same for all other exchange
rates.

Using the currency converter


• Press “MODE” until “0.” appears in the display.
• Ensure that the exchange rate has already been
saved.
• Press the green HOME key to enter the local
currency amount. Press the green EURO key to
convert the amount into euro.
Conversion example:
- US$1.56758 = EURO 1.00
- Enter 1.56758 as the country-specific conversion
rate.

- Enter the number 100 (for 100 US$) using the


keypad.
- Press the EURO key and “63.79” appears on the
display. This means that US$100 is equal to €63.79.

Word games
Hangman, User hangman, Anagram, User anagram,
Hangman auction (Auction), User hangman auction
(User auction), Match Maker, Fortune Tell, Lucky Draw.

Word games selection list


Press the MODE key until “Game” appears in the
display and then the first game “Hangman” appears.
Then press the ▲ or ▼ key to select one of the above-
mentioned games. Confirm your selection with the
ENTER key.

Hangman
The objective of the game is to identify an unknown
word by guessing all the letters.
The words are selected at random by the device.
Enter the letters using the keypad. If you have guessed
correctly, the letter appears in the display.
The player can decide the length of the word. It must
have a minimum of three letters and a maximum of nine.
The player has a maximum of five attempts, regardless
of the length of the word. After the fifth wrong guess,
the game is over and you will see “YOU LOSE” on the
display.

• Press the MODE key until “GAME” appears.
The first game “Hangman” is automatically
selected. “Hangman” appears in the display.
• Press the ENTER key to confirm your entry and
you will see “LANG: ENG”.
• Press the ▲ or ▼ key to play the game in the
desired language (ENG, FRE, GER etc.).
• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• Now you can decide the number of letters you
wish to be in the word.
• Press ▼ to increase the number of letters (max. 9)
or ▲ to decrease the number (min. 3).
• Confirm your selection with the ENTER key.
• Enter the letters using the keypad. If you have
guessed correctly, the letter appears in the display.
• If the letter is incorrect, a body part of the man
in the gallows appears in the right corner of the
display.
• After five body parts, the man in the gallows is
“hanged” and the game is lost. The word which
was being searched for appears in the display.
• If you press a letter already entered, “Already
used” appears in the display.
• To retrieve the answer, press the PHR key. The
answer appears briefly in the display.
• Enter the correct answer to proceed to the next
round or press the CLR key to go back to the
selection menu.

User hangman
The aim of this game is the same as with “Hangman”
except that the player enters a word, which his opponent
must guess.
The rest of the game proceeds as described under
Hangman.

Anagrams
The objective of the game is to create a word or several
words from the letters displayed. Each letter can only be
used once. The words are selected at random by the
device. Words of between three and nine letters can be
set.

Instructions
• Press the MODE key until GAME and then
“Hangman” appears on the display. Press the
▼ key until “Anagram” appears on the display.
• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• Press the ▲ or ▼ key to play the game in the
desired language (ENG, FRE, GER etc.).
• Press the ENTER key to confirm your choice of
language.
• Press ▼ to increase the number of letters (max. 9)
or ▲ to decrease the number (min. 3).
• Confirm your selection with the ENTER key.
• Randomly arranged letters appear in the display.
These must be entered in the correct order using
the keypad. If a number appears after the letters,
e.g. (2), then two words can be formed.
• If the word has been guessed correctly, “Good

word!” and “You win!” appear.


• You can also show the answer by pressing the
PHR key.
• Enter the correct answer to proceed to the next
round or press the CLR key to go back to the
selection menu.

User Anagram
The aim of this game is the same as in “Anagrams”
except that here, one player enters a word and his
opponent must guess it.

Auction
Like in the hangman game, the player has to guess an
unknown word. Here however, the number of answers
isn’t counted. Instead the player “buys” each letter.
Frequently used letters such as “a” cost more than more
seldomly used letters like “x”, “y” or “z”.
If the word is guessed before the money runs out, the
game is won.
The player can determine the word length. It must have
between 3 and 9 letters.
The player can also determine the amount of money to
be played with. The minimum is $100 and the maximum
is $250.
The best player is the one who begins with the least
amount of money.

Instructions
• Press the MODE key until “Game” and then
“Hangman” appears on the display. Then press the

▼ key until “Auction” appears on the display.


• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• Press the ▲ or ▼ key to play the game in the
desired language (ENG, FRE, GER etc.).
• Press ENTER to confirm the entry. “Letter 5”
appears on the display, meaning that a word with
five letters is being searched for.
• Press ▼ to increase the number of letters (max. 9)
or ▲ to decrease the number (min. 3).
• Confirm your selection with the ENTER key.
• Now decide on the amount you would like to
begin with.
• Press ▼ to raise the amount (max. $250) or ▲ to
lower the amount (min. $100).
• Press ENTER to confirm your entry and begin
guessing the unknown word by entering one word
after another via the keypad.
• During the game, you can press ENTER to
retrieve the costs of each letter with the ▼ or ▲
keys.
• Press ENTER to return to the game.
• If you guess the word before your money runs out,
you’ve won the game!
• To view the answer, press the PHR key.
• Enter the correct answer to proceed to the next
round or press the CLR key to go back to the
selection menu.

User auction
The objective of this game is the same as in “Auction”,
except that here one player enters a word and his

opponent must guess it.


The rest of the game is the same as described under
“Auction”.

Match Maker
The objective of this game is to find out if you and your
partner are suited to each other. Enter the date of birth for
you and your partner via the keypad. The more diamonds
appear on the display, the better you and your partner are
suited to each other. (2 diamonds = poor; 8 diamonds =
good).

Instructions
• Press the MODE key until “Game” and then
“Hangman” appear on the display. Then press
▼ until “Match Maker” appears.
• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• When “Birthday” appears on the display,
enter your date of birth (YYYY.MM.DD) and
confirm your entry with the ENTER key.
• Then enter your partner’s date of birth (YYYY.
MM.DD) and confirm with the ENTER key.
• After a few seconds, the result will be displayed.

Fortune Tell
The aim of this game is to see if you have luck on your
side or not on specific days. Just enter your date of birth
and then the current date. The more diamonds appear
on the display, the better the result (2 diamonds = bad; 8
diamonds = good).

Instructions
• Press the MODE key until “Game” and then
“Hangman” appear on the display; then press
▼ until “Fortune Tell” appears.
• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• When “Birthday” appears on the display, enter
your date of birth (YYYY.MM.DD).
• Press the ENTER key to confirm your entry.
• Now enter the date (YYYY.MM.DD) you
wish to ask the stars about and confirm with the
ENTER key.
• The result will be displayed after a few seconds.

Lucky Draw
This game predicts your lucky numbers.

Instructions
• Press the MODE key until “Game” and then
“Hangman” appear on the display. Then press
▼ until “Lucky Draw” appears.
• Press the ENTER key to confirm the entry.
• “Total 50” appears on the display. Now you can
enter the range from which your lucky numbers
will be drawn. The minimum is 15 (numbers will
be drawn from the range 1-15), the maximum is 99
(numbers will be drawn from the range 1-99).
• Confirm your selection with the ENTER key.
• Then you can choose how many lucky numbers
should be shown. The minimum is one and the
maximum is fifteen.
• Press ▲ or ▼ to select the number; press the

ENTER key to confirm.


• Only three numbers appear on the display. If
you select more than three, you can view the rest
by pressing the ▼ or ▲ keys.
• Press the ENTER key to view another selection
of numbers.
• To return to the selection menu, press the CLR
key.

Reset
If there are faults in the display, press the RESET button
on the back of the device. The device will be reset to the
factory settings.

Troubleshooting
This appliance has delicate electronic components.This
means that if it is placed near an object that transmits
radio signals, it could cause interference. This could
be, for example, mobile telephones, walkie talkies, CB
radios, remote controls and microwaves. If the display
indicates a problem, move such objects away from it.

Electrostatic charge can lead to the appliance failing.


In cases of the appliance failing to work remove the
batteries for a short while and then replace them.

Operating temperature
In order to avoid malfunction, the device should not be
exposed to temperatures of below -10° C
or above +40° C.

Cleaning and care


To clean, only use a dry, lint-free cloth.

Disposal
Disposing of the Device
Never dispose of the device in normal household waste.
The device should be disposed of via an authorized
waste disposal company or your local waste disposal
facility.
The valid regulations must be complied with.
If in doubt, contact your waste disposal facility.

Disposing of the battery


Dispose of the battery before disposing of the device.
Old batteries should not be disposed of in
household waste. Return your used batteries
to your dealer or the designated returns point.
