Components:
Power supply.
Silicon Controlled Rectifier.
Resistors.
Multimeter.
Theory:
An SCR(Silicon Controlled Rectifier) is a four layer PNPN device having three terminals
Anode, Cathode and Gate.SCR has two possible states ON and OFF. In off sate, it acts like
an open circuit and in ON case it acts like a short circuit between anode and cathode.
Actually open means high Resistance and short means low Resistance. SCR is used in many
applications including motor controls, time delay circuit, heater controls, phase controls and
relay controls [1].
Procedure:
• First of all make a circuit.
• Connect Ammeter through RG to measure the Ig, Ammeter through R1 to measure the IA.
• Connect voltmeter across SCR to measure VAK.
• Adjust the IG value in order to activate the SCR or Increase the value of VA.
• The multimeters are connected to determine the values of the Break Over Voltages,
Holding Current IG & Forward Current IAK.
• Slowly vary VA and note down the value of IA and VAK for every 5 volts.
