Electronic Circuit Design: V-I Characteristic Curves of SCR

This lab report summarizes an experiment to study the V-I characteristic curves of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). The objective was to determine how the SCR works as a switch and how it is affected by different gate current (IG) and forward current (IA) values. The experiment involved constructing a circuit with an SCR, resistors, a power supply and multimeters. Voltage and current measurements were taken across the SCR at increasing voltages to generate V-I curves and observe the SCR switching behavior under different IG levels. The results showed that increasing IG and forward voltage caused increases in the SCR's forward current.

V-I Characteristic curves of SCR
Objective:
To study the V-I Characteristics curves of SCR.
To determine how SCR works as a switch.
To show the working of SCR by different values of IG and IA.

Components:
Power supply.
Silicon Controlled Rectifier.
Resistors.
Multimeter.

Theory:
An SCR(Silicon Controlled Rectifier) is a four layer PNPN device having three terminals
Anode, Cathode and Gate.SCR has two possible states ON and OFF. In off sate, it acts like
an open circuit and in ON case it acts like a short circuit between anode and cathode.
Actually open means high Resistance and short means low Resistance. SCR is used in many
applications including motor controls, time delay circuit, heater controls, phase controls and
relay controls [1].

Procedure:
• First of all make a circuit.
• Connect Ammeter through RG to measure the Ig, Ammeter through R1 to measure the IA.
• Connect voltmeter across SCR to measure VAK.
• Adjust the IG value in order to activate the SCR or Increase the value of VA.
• The multimeters are connected to determine the values of the Break Over Voltages,
Holding Current IG & Forward Current IAK.
• Slowly vary VA and note down the value of IA and VAK for every 5 volts.
Circuit Diagram:

Results and Calculations:

S.NO IG=IG1=ma IG=IG2=ma
VAK(mv) IAK(ma) VAK(mv) IAK(ma)
1 573.75 4.341 613.869 20.15
2 586.68 6.459 618.93 24.03
3 593.75 9.364 623.51 29.231
4 600.89 11.401 632.80 35.12

V-I Characteristic curves:

Conclusion:
After perform this lab we come in conclusion to how SCR works using different values of
gate current and how it is activated.
