Tutorial Sheet 3 FM II CE 4th Sem 2

This document contains a tutorial sheet with 8 practice problems related to open channel flow and hydraulic jumps. The problems involve calculating quantities like sequent depth, discharge, Froude number, energy loss, and head required for flow over a weir. The tutorial sheet is for a fluid mechanics course in the Applied Mechanics Department at MNNIT Allahabad, India and covers open channel flow concepts for civil engineering students.

Tutorial Sheet I (Open Channel Flow-III)

1. In hydraulic jump occurring in a rectangular horizontal channel, the discharge per unit width is 2.5
m3 s/m and the depth before the jump is 0.25 m. Estimate (a) the sequent depth and (b) the energy
loss. (Ans. (a) 2.136 m, (b) 3.141 m)

2. A stationary hydraulic jump occurs in a rectangular channel with the initial and sequent depths being
equal to 0.20 m and 1.20 m, respectively. Estimate (a) the discharge per unit width and (b) the energy
loss. (Ans. (a) 1.284 m3 s, (b) 1.042 m)

3. If in a hydraulic jump occurring in a horizontal rectangular channel, the Froude number before the
jump is 10.0 and the energy loss is 3.20 m estimate the (a) sequent depth (b) the discharge intensity
and (c) the Froude number after the jump. (Ans. (a) 1.178 m, (b) 0.7941 m3 s /m, (c) 0.1983)

4. In a hydraulic jump occurring in a rectangular channel the discharge per unit width is 2.0 m3 s/m
and the energy loss is 1.75 m. Calculate the initial depth, initial Froude number and the sequent
depths of the jump. (Ans. 0.25 m, 5.10, 1.683 m)

5. A hydraulic jump occurs in a rectangular channel and the depths of flow before and after the jump are
0.5 m and 3.0 m. Calculate (a) the critical depth and (b) power lost per unit width of channel. (Ans.
(a) 1.379 m, (b) 129.4 kW)

6. At the toe of a hydraulic jump the Froude number and the depth of flow are 10.0 and 0.4 m
respectively. Estimate the specific energy head at the heel of the jump. (Ans. 5.57 m)

7. A hydraulic jump occurs in a horizontal 90° traiangular channel. If the sequent depths in this channel
are 0.60 m and 1.20 m, respectively. Estimate (a) the flow rate, (b) Froude number at the beginning
and the end of the jump and (c) energy loss in the jump. (Ans. (a) 1.541 m3 s, (b) 2.494, (c) 0.276
m)

8. A broad crested weir spanning the full width of a 2.0 m wide channel is 1.5 m high and has a square
entrance. What head is required to pass a discharge of 3.0 m3 s. (Ans. 1.005 m)
