The document discusses drylands and desertification, noting that drylands constitute areas that are arid, semi-arid or dry sub-humid. It states that desertification refers to land degradation occurring in drylands. Recent estimates using remote sensing show around 24-29% of global land experienced reduced biomass and productivity from 1980-2000, and 9.2% of drylands saw declines due to human causes.

Another study shows that arid, semi-arid and dry sub humid areas, together with the hyper

arid areas, constitute drylands. There is a slight difference between desertification and land
degradation it is not the process based but geographic difference. Although the land
degradation may occur anywhere around the world. When it occurs in the drylands it is
considered as desertification. It does not only refer to irreversible forms of land degradation
or even to desert expansion, but it encompasses all types and levels of land degradation.
which occurs in the dryland. The geographic classification of these dry lands is based on
aridity index.
Earlier the global assessment of desertification was just based on qualitative expert
evaluation. Then the extent of the desertification was found to range between 4% and 70% of
areas of the dry lands. Recent estimates are based on remote sensed data that shows about 24
to 29%of the global land area that is experienced reduction in the biomass and the
productivity between the 1980 and 2000. 9.2% of the drylands has experienced a decline in
the biomass productivity during this period due to anthropogenic causes.
North of the studies consider the rainfall dynamics and thus accounts for the effect of the
drought. On going less 10% of the dryland is undergoing desertification it occurs in the area
which contains 20% of the dryland’s population. The population has increased in these areas
from 172 million to 1950 to over 630 million presently.
