Effluents from the neutralization basin that is downstream of the regeneration facilities
for the Demineralization System GC and the Condensate Polishing System LD.
Laboratory drains.
Plant drains.
In the normal case, the collected wastewater has no significant content of oil, greases, or prohibited
chemicals and the pH value is within the permitted range of 6 to 9.
5* Transfers the treated waste to the plant discharge or to the coal pile runoff pond.
The larger collection basin is sized to retain one air heater wash water volume. The nominal size of
each collection basin is 1,850 cubic meters. Treatment of this volume is expected to occur in the
14 days following the air heater wash. During this period, the other plant wastewaters to be treated are
collected in the second basin and mixed with the air heater wash water in the treatment system. The
Wastewater Treatment System is sized to treat 58 t/h with a resulting effluent that meets all the
requirements for discharge to a Class II water (seawater) according to the Govenor's Decree and the
special total dissolved solids limits stated in Section 2.2.
The final pH adjustment of the wastewater is only necessary if the pH is not in the required 6 to 9 range.
The pH adjustment basin provides 1 hour retention at the system flow rate to allow time for complete
neutralization of the wastewater. Since caustic is the last chemical added for pH adjustment, acid is fed
to this basin and the basin mixer is used to distribute the acid uniformly. Instrumentation is provided to
monitor the effluent pH and control the rate of acid feed to this basin. The pH adjustment basin
overflows into the wastewater clearwell. If the pH alarm points are exceeded, the operator must re-
orient valves to recycle the wastewater without causing the basins to overflow. Changes in chemical
feed rates will also be required.
The solids contact unit is a recirculated sludge type of clarifier. This equipment is sized to treat the
system flow of 68 t/h while acting as a heavy metal removal process. The rise rate of this standard
clarifier unit is reduced to allow greater reaction and settling times. Operating experience will dictate
the actual maximum flow possible depending on the actual wastewater composition. An organic
polymer coagulant aid can be added at the inlet solids contact unit or directly into the center mixing
zone. The ability to add a sulfide precipitant at a later date has been designed into the system. The
solids contact unit is provided with a turbine type mixer to promote contact between the polymer and
precipitate particles. Wastewater from the solids contact unit flows by gravity to the wastewater gravity
filters. Sludge from the solids contact unit is periodically blown down into the sludge thickener.
The sludge dewatering filter press is sized to dewater sludge to a density of 320 kg/m3 with a remaining moisture content
of 15 to 20 percent. The low moisture content is due to the fact that the sludge cake will be almost entirely metal
hydroxide and most of the retained moisture will be in the form of bound moisture. Sludge is removed from the filter
press area by truck
All vents and drains for maintenance, inspection, and sampling are led to the plant drainage system
except those drains which are led to the neutralization basin or the wastewater sump.
Wastewater requiring neutralization is first led to the neutralization basin and then to the plant drains
treatment system. Other wastewater, excluding seawater, is led to the wastewater sump and then to the
plant drains system.
Condensate Polisher LD
Condensate polisher wastewater requiring neutralization is first led to the neutralization basin and then
to the plant drains treatment system. Other wastewater is led to the wastewater sump in the water
treatment building and then to the plant drains system.
Compressed air is used to control valve operations throughout the Wastewater Treatment System.
This building houses the Wastewater Treatment System controls and provides shelter for the chemical
preparation and feed equipment.
