Lesson – 5 Finding the

Percent, Rate and Base in a

Given Problem
Expectation:
 Define percentage, base and rate.
 Inter relate percentage, base and rate.
 Solve problems involving percentage rate and base.

Explanatory Activity:
Relationship of three terms – it indicates the formulas use in finding
the missing term.
Formulas:
P=BxR
P B=
P
B R R

P
R= B

Application:

Problem 1: Finding the Percentage

John saves 20% of his monthly income. If he earns ₱18,000 a month,
how much does he save?
Given:
R = 20% or .20
B = 18,000
P =?
Solution using formula:
P=BxR
P = 18,000 X .20
P = 3 600
Answer: John saves ₱3,600 monthly.

Problem 2: Finding the Base

A family spends ₱4,500 for food each month. If this represents 30%
of their income, how much is their monthly income?
Given:
R = 30% or .30
P = 4,500
B =?
Solution using formula:
P
B= R

4500
B = .30

B = 15,000 or ₱15,000
Problem 3: Finding the Rate
Mrs. Orceo has 18 boys and 22 girls in her class. What percent of the
students are girls?
 Since there are 18 boys and 22 girls, the total number of the studenrs
are 40.

R =?
P = 22 – total number of students
B = 40 – number of boys
Solution using formula:
P
R= B

22
R = 40

R = .55 or 55% girls.

4. Statements and Phrases can be Translated into Equation.

12 0
Example 1: 12 0 is 30% of what number? Finding the Base

120 = .30 x N
Solution:
120 = .30 x N
120 = .30N
120 .30 N
.30
= .30

400 = N
Example 2: 45 is what percent of 90? Finding the Rate

45 = P x 90
Solution:
45 = N x 90
45 = 90N
45 90N
90
= 90

45 = .50 or 50%

Example 3: 25% of 350 is what number? Finding the Percentage

.25 x 350 = N
Solution: .25 x 350 = n
87.5 = N

RECAP

 Percentage can be computed by getting the product of the rate and

the base.
 Rate can be computed by dividing the percentage by the base.
 Base can be computed by dividing the percentage and the rate
converted to decimal.
 There are various situations where we could relate percentage, rate,
and base for instance, in computing for profits and losses.
 We can also apply the systematic way of solving by translating
statement into equation.
Practices Exercises:
A. Find the rate of the following.
1. 10 is n% of 782
2. n% of 683 is 124
3. 7 is n% of 490
4. 63 is what percent of 190?
5. 145 of 342 is what percent?

B. Find the percentage given the following numbers.

6. 20% 120

7. 75% 80

8. 35% 90

9. 55% 150

10. 105% 250

C. Find the base of the following.

2. 10 is 6% of n.
3. 18 is 75% of what number?
4. 25 is 50% of what number?
