Analytical exposition text is a text that
elaborates the writer’s idea about the
phenomenon surroundings.
 Generic Structure
a. Thesis : Introducing the topic and
indicating the writer’s point of view.
b. Argument : Explaining the argument
to support the writer’s position.
Each argument must be supported
by evidence and explanation.
c. Reiteration : Restating the writer’s
point of view/to strenghten the
thesis.
 Language Features
a. Focus on generic human and non
human participants.
b. Use mental processes, it is used to
state what the writer or speaker
thinks or feels about something.
c. Need material processes. It is used
to state what happens.
d. Use of Simple Present Tense.
e. Use of Relational Processes.
f. Use of internal conjuction to state
argument.
g. Reasoning through casual
conjuction or nominalization.
 Social Function
To convince the audience that his/her
idea is an important matter.

2. Hortarory Exposition Text


 Definition
Hortarory exposition is a type of
English text that belongs to the class of
argumentation. It influences the reader
to do something or act in certain way.

 Generic Structure
a. Thesis : statement or
anoouncement of concerned issue.
b. Arguments : Reasons for concern
that will lead to recommendation.
c. Recommendation : Statement of
what should or should not happen
or be done based on the given
arguments.
 Language Feature
a. Grammar
- Use of Simple Present Tense.
- Use of Passive Sentence.
- Use of Modals and Adverb
(certainly,surely,etc).
- Use of Subject Pronoun (e.g I
and We)
- Use of Temporal Connectives
and Causal Connectives.
- Use of Evaluative Language.
b. Vocabulary ( a few words/phrases
that often appear :
suggest,recommend, should strong,
advantages, however, reason,
argument, think, important, make,
firstly.
c. Common Expression :

To persuade the audience that

case or be done.

3. Explanation Text
 Definition
Explanation text is a text which tells
processes relating to forming of
natural,social,scientific and cultural
phenomena.
 Generic Structure
a. General statement; stating the
phenomenon issues which are to be
explained.
b. Sequenced explanation; stating a
series of steps which explain the
phenomena.
c. Concluding statement.
 Language Features
a. Grammar
- Use of Passive Voice Pattern.
- Use of Simple Present Tense.
- Use of Technical Terms.
- Use of words that show cause
and effect.
- Use of abstract noun.
- Use of action verbs.
- Use of noun phrases.
b. Vocabulary
A few words/phrases that often
appear: first, then, next,as a
consequence, because, lead to,
however, include, similar to, differs
from, resulted in.
c. Common Expression

To explain the audience how and why
something works or happens.

4. Discussion Text
 Definition
Discussion text is a text which present
a problematic discourse. This problem
is discussed from different points of
view. It present pro and contra opinion
on certain issue.
 Generic Structure
a. General statement to introduce the
audience to the topic of discussion-
it can include a question and the
view of the author can be expressed
here (called the discussion’s thesis).
b. A series of paragraphs that have
points for and against the topic- the
text may have paragraphs on the for
side followed by paragraphs on the
against side, and within the
paragraphs there should be evidence
to support the point of view.
c. A concluding paragraph that sums
up the discussion and gives the
opinion of the author of the text.
 Language Features
a. Grammar
- Use of the Simple Present Tense.
- Use of medium to high degrees
of modality.
- Use of quoted and speech to
support arguments.
- Use of passive voice to change
focus of sentences.
- Focus on beginning of
sentences.
- Use of complex combinatiom of
clauses.
- Use of complex sentences.
b. Vocabulary

writer/speaker to present (at least) two
points of view about issue or problem,
to present arguments from differing
points of view about issue or problem.
