Pre-requisites:

A fundamental understanding on importance of process management is desirable.

Aim:

The intent of this course is to further provide management and analytical concepts/tools for the
management of operations and the decision-making process within the scope of the Production and
Operations Management. Competitive advantage driven by right operations strategy has been a common
practice in the business environment in the past few years. Most of the strategies involve improving
operational efficiency either through cost reductions or increase capital efficiency. Decision-making
regarding operational issues is one of the most common tasks within organizations. This course will
enhance students' ability to perform the quantitative analysis necessary and understand the management
issues in order to make good operational decisions. Coverage is focused and will include operations
management framework, operations and performance measurement, process analysis, process structure,
operations scheduling, Service process selection and design and Quality management.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, students would be able to:

 To familiarize with the concepts, theory, mathematical-statistical techniques and latest issues
keeping the perspective of the Operations Managers. This will be done mainly through class
room lectures and discussing case studies.
 To provide with an opportunity, through case analysis and numerical exercises, to apply
concepts, theories and mathematical models to the solution of operations management.
 To understand the use of Gantt chart, Queuing Analysis as helpful tool of decision making.
 To prepare a process flow chart and to analyze it.
 To understand the role of quality in processes and to statistically measure and control it.
 To understand which kind of manufacturing process is appropriate for a specific industry.
Syllabus:

Unit 1: Operations Strategy and Managing Change

Operations management: trends and Issues, operations strategy and competitiveness, Product design.

Unit 2: Process selection and design

Process flow chart, types of process, measuring process performance, Productivity process throughput
time reduction, design of manufacturing processes, design of service processes, Quality management–
focus on six sigma.

Unit 3: Strategic capacity management


Processes and capacity analysis, Capacity management in operations, capacity planning concept.

Unit 4: Supply Chain Design

Supply chain Strategy, Strategic capacity Management, Lean production.

Unit 5: Planning and controlling the supply chain

Forecasting, aggregate sales and operations planning, Inventory control material Requirement
Planning, Operations Scheduling, Waiting Line Analysis.

Projects:

Visit any small scale industry or service sector like Bank, restaurant, Amusement parks and discuss their
processes. Also make your critical review. Analysis of various queues on the business outlets.
