Collocations Exposicion

Collocations are groups of words that commonly go together in English because they sound natural to native speakers, even if their literal meaning seems odd. There are different types of collocations depending on the parts of speech combined, such as noun-adjective or verb-adverb. Collocations have a compositional meaning where the individual words' meanings contribute to the whole, unlike idiomatic expressions which cannot be understood from their parts.

Collocations are groups of words that go together in English, because they have settled over time

and to native ears, they sound more natural than any other.

Let's look at this example:

- Tomorrow I have to do an oral test.

- Oh mother, but they have given you a black eye!

- I'll tell a white lie and say I knocked on the door.

It sounds weird but it is understood, that is the essence of the collocation.

There are different types of collocations, depending on the kinds of words that are combined:

-Noun and adjective.

-Verb and noun.

-Verb and adverb.

-Adjective and adverb.

-Noun, preposition and noun.

Do not confuse:

collocations should not be confused with other unpredictable word combinations such as
idiomatic expressions

The meaning of the collocations is compositional, that is, it is possible to identify which part of the
meaning of the set contributes to each of the individual components.

The Idiomatic expressions, change, meaning bloc, without being able to identify partial meanings
that reside specifically in each of its components.
