RCD Types - at A Glance

Different types of RCDs exist depending on their behavior in the presence of DC components and frequencies. A type A RCD can detect and respond to AC sinusoidal waves and pulsating DC components. Type A RCDs are suitable for equipment with electronic components like single phase inverters. A type F RCD can detect high frequency residual current in addition to types A and C, making it suitable for frequency controlled equipment. A type B RCD can respond to smooth DC residual current in addition to types A, C and F, for applications like electric vehicle chargers.

RCD’s exist in various different forms and react
RCD Examples of type of equipment / load
Resistive, Capacitive, Inductive loads generally
without any electronic components, typically:

Types of

Type AC
differently depending on the presence of DC
components or different frequencies. The following • Immersion heater
• Oven/Hob with resistive heating elements
RCD’s are available with the respective symbols

typically:

Type AC - General purpose use • Single phase invertors

• Class 1 IT and Multimedia equipment
“Different types of RCDs exist, RCD can detect & respond to AC • Power supplies for Class 2 equipment
depending on their behaviour in sinusoidal wave only. • Appliances such as a washing machine
that is not frequency controlled e.g. d.c. or

• Electric Vehicle charging where any smooth
DC fault current is less than 6 mA
RCD can detect & respond as for type
AC, PLUS pulsating DC components. Type A is also suitable for Type AC
applications.
Frequency controlled equipment / appliances,
typically:
Type F – Equipment with frequency
• Some washing machines, dishwashers and
controlled speed drives driers e.g. containing synchronous motors*

Type F
• Some class 1 power tools
RCD can detect & respond as for type A, • Some air conditioning controllers using

Type F is also suitable for Type AC and Type

A applications.
Three phase electronic equipment typically:
Type B –Electric vehicle chargers, PV
supplies. • Inverters for speed control
• UPS
RCD can detect & respond for type F, • Electric Vehicle charging where any smooth
DC fault current is greater than 6mA
PLUS smooth DC residual current.

Type B
• Photo voltaic
• Power Electronic Converter Systems (PECS)
typically:
• Industrial machines
• Cranes

Type B is also suitable for Type AC, Type A

and Type F applications.
