Preparing to teach this course

Instructor qualifications
Instructors must possess all of the teaching skills that are required of a successful instructor. This
section describes the additional course-specific knowledge that instructors should have.

Instructor background
This section describes the technical and tool-specific knowledge that is necessary for instructors to
deliver the course successfully. If the instructor cannot address these topics and draw on industry
experience in doing so, the course might not be successful.

The instructor should have the following skills:

• Know how to install and configure Netcool/OMNIbus
• Know how to install and configure Netcool/Impact
• Know how to install and configure IBM Operations Analytics Log Analysis
• Know how to install and configure IBM Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition
• Know how to install IBM Tivoli Netcool Configuration Manager

The instructor should successfully complete the following prerequisite courses:

• TN025 IBM Netcool/OMNIbus 8.1 Installation and Configuration
• TN045 IBM Tivoli Netcool/Impact Administration and Implementation
• TN325 IBM Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition 4.2 Operations and Administration
• TN630 IBM Operations Analytics Log Analysis 1.3 Administration
• TOD44 IBM Tivoli Netcool Configuration Manager 6.4.2: Operations and Configuration

The instructor should have the following certifications:

• IBM Certified Deployment Professional Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus
• IBM Certified Deployment Professional Tivoli Netcool/Impact
• IBM Certified Deployment Professional Tivoli Network Manager

Note: There is no certification currently for Netcool Configuration Manager.

Suggested instructor preparation
This course contains a significant amount of material. The instructor must be completely
comfortable with the slide material, and the suggested times as described in the agenda.

The slide presentations include some detail about the installation of Netcool/OMNIbus,
Netcool/Impact, Log Analysis, Tivoli Network Manager, and Netcool Configuration Manager. This
course is not designed to provide detailed instruction on how to install these products. The students
should already know how to install these products. The lecture material includes the product
installation because in some cases there are steps that are unique to Netcool Operations Insight.
• Read through the Student Notebook. The instructor should be very comfortable discussing each
topic and fielding questions in each unit.
• Complete each unit in the Course Exercise Guide before teaching the class.

Important: This course is very challenging. The student must follow the instructions exactly as
written. If the option exists, the student should create image checkpoints or snapshots after every
unit. If the student fails to perform an exercise as documented, they risk corrupting their image.
The risk is especially high when they install Netcool Configuration Manager.

General recommendations for all IBM courses

Some of these resources might not be available until later in the course development process.
Review what is available and check back later for more resources:
• Attend any instructor training that is available for this course.
• Check for an SPVC (self-paced virtual class) of the course and, if available, attend it.
• Review the following course information:
– Locate the course description in the online course catalog at www.ibm.com/training.
– Read the course overview and course outline to understand the overall course content.
– Review the audience for which the course is intended.
Know your audience so that you can assist the students and tailor the course for anyone
who does not meet the audience background but is still participating in the course.
– Review the student prerequisites for this course.
You must know all of the information in the prerequisite courses. Depending on the
audience background and prerequisites, it might be necessary to review previous materials.
– Review the skills taught in this course.
Be sure that you know and understand all of the target skills for the course before you
attempt delivery.

Course overview

• Study the course materials.
Request the course materials, including the Instructor Guide, and request access to the course
labs at least two weeks before you are available to study them. Ensure that you understand
how to run the lab exercises and how to complete all lab setup steps that are required.
• Review all of the training paths that refer to this course.
You should know what comes before and after this course so that you can verify that your
audience meets the prerequisites and sell your audience on the follow-on courses.

Course overview
This 4-day class teaches you how to install the Netcool for Operations Insight components,
including Networks for Operations Insight.

On Day 1 and Day 2 of this class, you install Netcool/OMNIbus, Netcool/OMNIbus Web GUI,
Netcool/Impact, and IBM Operations Analytics Log Analysis. In addition, you install and configure
the event search and event analytics features that are unique to Netcool Operations Insight.

On Day 3, you install IBM Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition and the topology search feature.

On Day 4, you install IBM Tivoli Netcool Configuration Manager and verify the solution.

Strategy

Teaching strategy
Each classroom session uses a combination of facilitated lecture, discussions, group exercises,
and demonstrations to convey the material.

Introduce the material

Inform the students of the objectives of the unit and topic. Give them a brief scenario that helps
them understand how the presented material will assist them in performing their jobs.

Facilitate the learning experience

Involve the students in the learning process. Ask them questions and present classroom scenarios
in which students use the available resources to solve situations involving process, procedure, or
content on the job.

Review the material
Review objectives at the conclusion of each unit to ensure that the students have a thorough
understanding of the material.

Group exercises and labs are used to reinforce knowledge and skills that the students have learned
in the previous classroom topics. The instructor serves as a mentor in checking results, answering
questions, and providing constructive feedback and evaluation.

Course evaluation
Evaluation measures the quality, effectiveness, and impact of the course. It enables students to
answer the question, “Are the requirements and objectives of the course being met?”

For all classes, instructors will provide an end-of-course questionnaire that students will complete
as feedback on course quality.
