Figurative Language: Similes & Metaphors

Descriptive writers use figurative language to create vivid images in their readers’ minds. Two types of
figurative rlanguage are similes and metaphors.

In a simile, two things that are not alike are compared. A simile always uses the word like or as.
After lifting weights all summer, Rick was as solid as a rock.
I, however, was soft like a marshmallow.

Complete this sentence to create a simile.

The __eyes___________ were as blue as the sky.

Describe something heavy by using the simile “as heavy as lead.”

___ My grandmother's closet was so full that it couldn't be moved because it was as heavy as
lead._

Now, use a simile to compare the autumn tree to the sun.

__ Her orange dress shone in the field so as the autumn tree in the sun. _

Compare a flower with a butterfly. Use a simile.

_ That Lily was as funny as the fluttering of the butterfly in the sea. ______

A metaphor also compares two things that are not alike, but it does not use the words like or as. In a
metaphor, one item is said to be the other item. Here are two examples:
The snow was a blanket, protecting the tender spring flowers.
The lantern moon hung in the sky.

Use a metaphor to describe something light (in weight) by comparing the object to a feather.
___ She woke up from the dream, but still her thoughts played, being feathers in the air. __

Use a metaphor to compare a rainbow with a snake.

__ only the colors of the rainbow could be compared to the beauty of the color of that snake. _

Write three more metaphors to describe things you see right now:
1. Rabbits remind me a lot of Roberto, when he jumps.
2. Mario reminds me of winter rays when he talks.
3. His work reminds me of the ants
