Topic 1 Class differences in achievement (1) external factors

Answers to QuickCheck Questions on page 25

1. Any three of the following: educated parents are more likely to: be aware of what is needed to
assist their children’s educational progress; read to their children; teach their children letters,
numbers, songs, poems and nursery rhymes, painting and drawing; help with homework; be actively
involved in their child’s schooling; guide their children’s interactions with school; visit museums and
libraries with them.

2. Any two of the following: fatalism; collectivism; immediate gratification; present-time orientation.

3. Any three of the following: wider vocabulary; based on longer, grammatically more complex
sentences; speech is more varied and communicates abstract ideas; context-free where the speaker
does not assume the listener shares the same experiences, so they spell out their meanings explicitly
for the listener.

4. Educational policies and programmes that intervene early in the socialisation process to
compensate children for the deprivation they experience at home.

5. Any three of the following: makes it harder for the child to play and study; disrupts the child’s
education; results in more absences from school; difficulties concentrating in class; results in
emotional or behavioural problems; having to do without equipment; missing out on experiences
that would enhance educational achievement; pupils needing to take on jobs, thereby having a
negative impact on their schoolwork; restricts choice of university.

6. Economic capital refers to wealth. Educational capital refers to qualifications. Cultural capital
refers to the knowledge, attitudes, values, language, tastes and abilities of the middle class.
