Introduction

As the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) approved the use of

3.1-10.6 GHz frequency band for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) system in 2002, there
have been growing interests in designing low profile, cost effective and highly
integrated UWB antennas. The widely used single element UWB antenna
configurations are of monopole type [1]-[2], aperture type [3]-[4] and tapered
slotline type [5]-[6] antennas. All these three types of antennas may achieve good
return loss and radiation performances. On the other hand, owing to the demands
of high data rate transmission, multiple-input multiple-output system (MIMO)
system has gained increasing interests and becomes the standard for many
communication systems. UWB MIMO system requires multiple antennas with a
wide impedance bandwidth and good isolation performance between antenna
ports. Several types of MIMO antennas have been successfully proposed for the
application. In [7], spiral and sinuous antennas are used to provide multimode
radiation. Spaced wide slot antennas are proposed for MIMO applications in [8].
Two different types of antennas operating with orthogonal modes for good
isolation are reported in [9]. In this paper, a compact, high isolation, and dual
polarized antenna is presented. The proposed antenna is compact and has good
port isolation and radiation performances, making it suitable for UWB MIMO
applications.

Antenna Design

The proposed antenna structure is shown in Fig. 1. The antenna is

designed on a 0.6mm thick FR4 PCB with dielectric constant εr=4.4 and loss
tangent δ=0.02. The antenna has a ground plane of dimension L = 40mm and W
= 50mm. The presented MIMO antenna consists of a microstrip fed rectangular
aperture antenna and an exponentially tapered slotline antenna fed with a
microstrip to slotline transition. Both antennas are designed for the UWB
frequency band from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz. The open end of tapered slotline
antenna is seamlessly connected to the aperture antenna, resulting in a simple and
compact UWB MIMO antenna, as shown in Fig. 1. This MIMO antenna is
particularly configured to generate orthogonal radiation modes from each antenna.
Detail antenna parameters are listed as followed. Dimensions of the
aperture mode antenna are: Ws=13mm, Ls=32mm, SL=12mm, SW=7mm, T=1mm
and Lm=9mm. For the tapered slotline mode antenna, the exponentially tapering

equation is written by a ⋅ e , where a=0.55, d=5, y=20.5mm, R1=R2=1.8mm,
d1=8.1mm and d2=7.5mm.

Simulation and Experimental Results

The proposed UWB MIMO antenna prototype is successfully built and

measured. The S-parameters measurements are performed with Agilent's E5071B
Network Analyzer, while radiation patterns are measured with the anechoic
chamber of EW Lab in National Taiwan University (NTU). Fig. 2 shows the
simulated and measured S-parameters of the presented antenna. The results show
a good agreement between simulation and measurement in the lower frequency
band (3-6GHz) and a slight discrepancy at the higher band (7-10GHz) resulting
from the capacitive coupling between SMA connector and FR4 substrate. The
measured port-to-port isolation has very good performance with below -25dB
from 4GHz to higher frequencies. The isolation performance degrades as the
frequency decreases, with -20dB is observed at 3.1GHz, the low end of UWB
band. The low frequency performance is mainly affected by the finite size of
substrate and disturbed current distribution by SMA connector.
The results of radiation patterns are shown in Fig. 3 for 4GHz and Fig. 4
for 8GHz, respectively. The radiation pattern of aperture mode antenna remains
fairly constant with high cross polarization discrimination (XPD) at zenith over a
wide frequency range. On the other hand, the performance of tapered slotline
mode antenna shows degradation in cross polarization ratio at zenith at higher
frequency due to its asymmetrical structure. Note the main pattern of co-
polarization for each port is different from each other, which results in good
isolation between two ports and pattern diversity for the system performance.

Conclusion

A UWB MIMO antenna with dual-polarization and high port isolation is

proposed with simulation and measurement included in this paper. The antenna
shows good performances in reflection coefficient and high isolation with S21 < -
20dB in the entire UWB band. The radiation patterns show fairly constant pattern
stability in aperture mode port and some variation observed for the slotline mode.
The orthogonal radiation patterns between the ports are achieved that the
presented antenna is suitable for MIMO communication applications.
