Importance of English Language

One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is the colossal upsurge in how international study
is expanding day by day. Many international institutions are making plans and policies to
compete students in an international level. ESOL (English as a second Language) is also one of
the effective plans among them. The ESOL course is designed for those who are looking to
upgrade their use and understanding of the language. There is a widespread worry that this will
only lead to a myriad of concerns in society. English language is very important to communicate
and interact with different people around the world (Black, n.d.).

On the one hand, Yes, I feel international students at CCBC (Community Collage of Baltimore
Country) should be required to take ESOL courses before enrolling in major courses for their
academic qualification. Every aspect has both merits and demerits in their circumstances. Likely,
talking to the merits one of the significant benefits of ESOL is to provides students to complete
an assortment of writing assignments (including professional and academic procedure). For
example, many international students are coming to study from the place where English is
spoken, but in a different manner from American English. For example: Some students spell
“color” where other spell “colour” (Dicker, 1996). In my view, English language skill should be
needed to students to succeed in work, school, and day to day life. ESOL does not disvalue the
language background but make easier to communicate with people around in proper ways which
means students will learn the language and learned how to use it in day-to-day life. The
important reasons to learn an ESOL will give students a much wider choice of pleased such as to
get more job opportunities, can earn more, right of entry to the information, academic
qualifications, and easy travel.

On the other hand, there are several arguments in favor of my stance. One of the most
preponderant one is that ESOL have some negative consequences for the students in various
ways. Firstly, students will be frustrated if they know how to do the task, but they did not
understand properly. It will lose the willingness to study in a systematic way. Secondly, students
are facing the problem in Grammar, Vocabulary, Slang, pronunciation compare to their home
countries whereas; students do not take the study seriously (Wolfram & Schilling-Estes, n.d.).
The communication barrier makes things difficult, leading to misunderstanding. Also, we can see
the language discrimination all over the world. Most of the universities now use English as
intermediate of instruction. Therefore, students must focus to learn the English language.
Otherwise, they are not eligible to study on those institutions where English language is in the
primary level.

Lastly, in my opinion CCBC professors, administrators and specific ESOL professors, program
coordinators, and chair of the department should encourage ESOL as primary requirement before
main course start. Students are encouraged to spend their significant portion of their time to
enlarge language skills and able to communicate in English with confident. With the presence of
ESOL course students are enabled to enhance their speaking, writing, listening, and reading to
rise their grammar and vocabulary. ESOL focus on critical thinking, as well as group and project
works. If students learned English, they will be able to tackle the world through intellectual
resources and educate themselves for further future success.

In view of arguments outlined above, one can conclude that despite having some benefits, the
drawbacks of ESOL in the society are indeed too dire to ignore. By studying English in
Australia, students will achieve various important of life skills compare to the home country. The
international students in educational institutions will learn the world’s language in accurately
international environments.
