Safety valves
226 Series (DN 8) / 227 Series (DN 10)

General information concerning the use, installation and maintenance of safety devices against excess
pressure to ensure compliance with occupational safety and functional requirements

Safety devices (safety, blow-off and discharge valves) are used to protect pressure vessels, piping and other plant
components against excess pressure. Safety valves must not be used as overflow valves!
These safety devices are especially suited for compressed air and other non-toxic, neutral and non-flammable
gases that may be freely released, taking account of the operating conditions and safety requirements. The media
must not contain any impurities, and in particular no solid matter, because these could result in changes in the set
pressure and/or leakage.
Our safety valves should be classified as "normal" safety valves in accordance with their opening characteristics.
They should therefore be dimensioned and used in such a way that the permissible operating pressures cannot be
exceeded by more than 10%. Temporary rises up to a maximum of 10% above the permissible operating pressure
are allowed.
When selecting the valves, please remember that the materials must be compatible with the connection piece of
the pressure system in order to prevent corrosion.
Extreme care is essential when installing safety devices against excess pressure. They should not be removed
from their packaging until they are ready to be installed. Suitable tools and the hexagonal surfaces on the screwed
end should be used for assembly.
The male threads must not be tightened to more than the following torques due to strength considerations:
Male thread Max. tightening torque [Nm] for male threads
made of
brass
2 2
Steel Rp0.2<=300 N/mm Steel Rp0.2>300 N/mm
(e.g. 1.4571, 1.4104) (e.g. 1.4021)
G 1/4A 15 20
G 3/8A and M 16x1.5 25 40
G 1/2A and M 22x1.5 35 50
G 3/4A and M 26x1.5 45 60
G 1A 55 70
The sealing
surfaces between the safety devices and the connection piece must be kept clean. If copper sealing rings are
used, they must be annealed at 400°C, quenched and checked for flawless surface quality prior to assembly.
The above-mentioned safety devices against excess pressure have an "open bonnet" design (with no connection
for the discharge line). They must therefore be arranged in such a way that no risk to persons, etc. arises from the
released medium as a result of the jet pressure, medium temperature or sound level!
Safety precautions (e.g. hearing protection) appropriate to the potential hazard must be taken before setting the set
pressure or carrying out the functional test!
Safety valves may only be set by authorised persons!
Direct-acting safety valves must always be installed vertically. If this is not possible in exceptional cases, the
mounting position must be explicitly verified, if necessary in consultation with the manufacturer. The functionality of
the safety valves must be tested at regular intervals by lifting. The test intervals must be fixed by the owner of the
plant, taking the operating conditions into account. Six-monthly tests are recommended by the manufacturer as a
minimum. The safety valves must be lifted at a pressure greater than or equal to 85% of the set pressure.
If a safety valve leaks as a result of impurities in the working fluid, it may be possible to restore its tightness by
repeated lifting. To do this, proceed as follows:
Turn the knurled screw anticlockwise until it snaps audibly. The valve should now be tight again. After lifting
the valve in this way, turn the knurled screw clockwise so that it is fastened only loosely. The valve should now
work again.
If the sealed lead disc is lost, it can be replaced with a new one. Lead discs can be obtained from the
manufacturer. The valve can also be sealed with a lead wire.
The spring housing of a safety valve (SVW), blow-off valve (ABV) or discharge valve (ASV) can also be unscrewed
from the valve body without changing the pressure setting, in order to clean the valve seat and the valve seat
seal with a soft object (e.g. a brush). When the valve is re-assembled, it should not be tightened to a torque of
more than 15 Nm.
Safety valves may only be dismantled and assembled by authorised persons! Defective safety devices against
excess pressure may only be repaired or maintained by the manufacturer or an authorised workshop!
We recommend returning any defective safety devices to us for repair.
