Massacre 4

A massacre is defined as the killing of multiple defenseless individuals and is generally seen as morally unacceptable, especially when perpetrated by political actors. There is no objective definition for what constitutes a "massacre". While various international organizations have proposed defining related crimes against humanity, a massacre does not necessarily meet the criteria of these legal definitions. Other similar terms that may overlap include war crimes, pogroms, mass killings, and extrajudicial killings.

Le Massacre de Scio ("The Chios massacre") a painting (1824) by Eugène Delacroix depicting the massacre of
Greeks on the island of Chios by Ottoman troops during the Greek War of Independence in 1822.

A massacre is the killing of multiple individuals and is usually considered to be morally

unacceptable, especially when perpetrated by a group of political actors against
defenseless victims. The word is a loan of a French term for "butchery" or "carnage".[1]
There is no objective definition of what constitutes a "massacre". Various international
organisations have proposed a formal definition of the term crimes against humanity,
which would however include incidents of persecution or abuse that do not result in
deaths.[2] Conversely, a "massacre" is not necessarily a "crime against
humanity".[3] Other terms with overlapping scope include war crime, pogrom, mass
killing, mass murder, and extrajudicial killing.
