Classwork or Homework Investigating Diffusion in Air

This document describes an experiment students carried out to investigate how quickly perfume spreads through diffusion in a classroom. In the experiment, one student sprayed perfume while another student started a stopwatch, and a third student indicated when they could smell the perfume. The document then asks questions about how factors like classroom size and temperature would affect the time it takes for the perfume to diffuse through the air.

6.

2 Investigating diffusion in the air

This exercise relates to 6.3 Investigating diffusion from the Coursebook.

In this exercise, you make predictions and discuss an investigation.

Some students want to investigate how quickly perfume spreads around a room.

The windows are closed.

Sam sits at the front of the classroom. He has his ears covered and he
faces the front.

Amal and Elsa are at the back of the room.

This is what they do:

• Amal sprays the perfume for one second.

Elsa starts the stopwatch.

When Sam can smell the perfume, he raises his arm.

• Elsa stops the stopwatch.

Unit 6 States of matter

1 Why is it important that Sam does not see or hear when Amal
sprays the perfume? Remember
The particles in gas can move
Because Sam might lied about the smell of the perfume saying away from each other.
he has smell the perfume when he has not.
Think about what speeds up
the movement.

2 How does the smell reach Sam?

By diffusion the smell can reach Sam.

3 The students later carry out the same investigation in a smaller classroom.

Will it take more time or less time for Sam to smell the perfume?

Less time

Explain your answer.

Since the molecules in the perfume will travel faster in smaller classroom.

4 When they do the investigation in the smaller classroom, should the windows
be open or closed?

Closed

Explain your answer.

If the windows are open then the molecules will go out of the windows thus affecting the experiment.

5 The students do the investigation in the first classroom again, on a different day
when it is much colder.
Will it take more time or less time for Sam to smell the perfume?

More time

Explain your answer.

Since temperature affects the rate of diffusion, when temperature decreases (cold), the molecules acquire
less kinetic energy and thus travel at a lower rate taking more time.
