Sheet 1 (Phase Diagram)

The document provides 10 problems related to soil properties including void ratio, porosity, unit weight, degree of saturation, water content, and phase diagrams. The problems provide various soil sample parameters and ask the reader to calculate related unknown soil properties.

Sheet 1

( phase diagram )

1- A soil has a total mass 1870 g and its total volume is 1000 cm3, after being
completely dried in an oven, its mass become 1677 g , if specific gravity is 2.66.
Draw its three phases diagram, then Find void ratio, porosity, unit weight, degree of
saturation and water content .

2- A fully saturated clay sample has a weight of 126 g , and has a volume of 62 cmᶾ .
The sample weight was 103 g after oven drying . Assume that the volume does not
change during drying , Determine void ratio and specific gravity .

3- A partially saturated soil sample obtained from an earth fill has a natural moisture
content of 22% , a unit weight of 1.84 g/cm3 and a specific gravity of 2.76.
Compute the degree of saturation and the void ratio.

4- A saturated soil sample has a water content 28 % and a specific gravity of 2.7.
Determine the dry density and the void ratio of this soil.

5- A soil sample has a unit weight of 105.7 pcf and a saturation of 50%. When its
saturation is increased to 75% its unit weight raises to 112.7 pcf. Determine the voids
ratio e and specific gravity Gs of this soil.

6- A cohesive soil sample was taken from an SPT and returned to the laboratory in a
glass jar. It was
found to weigh 140.5 g. The sample was then placed in a container of V = 500 cm3 and
423 cm3 of
water were added to fill the container. From these data, what was the unit weight of
the soil in
kN/m3?

7- A soil has an in-situ voids ratio eo = 1.87, Wc = 60%, and G 2.75 . What is b moist
and S ?

8- A soil has a unit weight of 20.5 kN/m3. If Gs = 2.68 and w = 12.5 %, find dry, e , n ,
and S.
9- A saturated soil sample has a unit weight of 122.5 pcf and Gs = 2.70. Find dry , e, n,
and w.

10- For a granular soil having a unit weight = 17.5 KN/M3, Dr = 82 %, Wc = 8 % and Gs =
2.65 . If emin = 0.44 . what would be emax ? and what would be the dry unit weight in
the loosest state ?
