Clausulas Relativas

• Concept:

We use Relative Clauses / relative clauses to give essential information about someone
or something, information that we need to understand what or to whom it refers.
Utilizamos Relative Clauses / cláusulas relativas para dar información esencial sobre
alguien o algo, información que necesitamos para entender a qué o a quién se refiere.
To give that additional information, we use relative pronouns or relative pronouns. This
is a list of the relative pronouns or relative pronouns with their respective use:
Para dar esa información adicional, usamos pronombres relativos o relative pronouns.
Esta es una lista de los relative pronouns o pronombres relativos con su respectivo uso:
Independent clause = I.C
Relative clause = R.C

• EXAMPLES 1:

1. I.C: She is my daughter. She is 4 years old.


R.C: She is my daughter who is 4 years old.
R.C +: My daughter, who is 4 years old, is in the school.

2. I.C: This is my dog spike. Spike jumps very high.


R.C: This is my dog Spike which jumps very high.
R.C +: My dog Spike, which is at the vet, jumps very high.

3. I.C: They are our new friends. We met them in Paris.


R.C: They are our new friends whom we met in Paris.
R.C +: Our friends, whom we met in Paris, are in England.

4. I.C: He is Michael. Michael is Jhon’s father.


R.C: He is Michael whose son is Jhon.
R.C +: Michael, whose son is Jhon, ish ere.

5. I.C: Luis is at the hotel. The hotel is near his house.


R.C: Luis is at the hotel that is near his house.

• EXERCISES:

Write in English the following sentences using relative clauses.

1. El pez es un animal que vive en el agua.


The fish is an animal that / which lives in the water.

2. El hombre que vino ayer es mi esposo.


The man who came yesterday is my husband.

3. Mi hermana, quien estaba leyendo el libro, es muy inteligente.


My sister, who was reading the book, is very intelligent.

4. Jany es la chica que canta la canción.


Jany is the girl who sings the song.

5. Los niños, a quien viste ayer, son mis primos.


The children /kids, whom you saw yesterday, are my cousins.
