Aircraft Maintenance Manual: Print Date: 2021-03-25
1. General
A. Oil system replenishing includes procedures to do quantity checks and add lubricating oil
to the components that follow:
– Integrated drive generator (IDG) oil reservoirs (12−13−24)
– Auxiliary power unit (APU) oil tank (12−13−49)
– Engine oil tanks (12−13−79)
– Air turbine starter (ATS) oil reservoirs (12−13−80).
2. Oil Specification
A. To determine the correct oil specification for the components listed above, refer to the
consumables table in the related servicing procedures and then refer to the related item
number in the consumables materials list (Ref. TASK 51−31−00−990−801).
3. Description
A. IDG Oil−System Replenishing
Refer to Figure 1.
(1) There are two IDGs installed on the aircraft. One IDG is mounted on each engine.
For servicing, the lower translating−cowl door and the lower core−cowl door for the
engine are opened to get access to the IDG.
(2) The IDG is lubricated with turbine oil contained in the IDG case. A low oil−level
indicator on the side of the IDG case has a sight glass to permit a visual check of
the IDG oil level.
(3) The IDG is replenished through a quick−disconnect coupling on the IDG case. A
pressure oil dispenser and adapter are connected to the coupling to add oil.
(4) An internal standpipe controls the maximum quantity of oil that can be put in the
IDG. Any oil that is more than the maximum permitted quantity goes out of the
standpipe until it is level with the top. The bottom of the standpipe is closed with a
plug when the replenishing procedures are complete.
(5) To fill the IDG to the correct level, the standpipe plug is removed and oil is added
until it comes out of the standpipe. The flow of oil stops when the oil is level with the
top of the standpipe. The IDG then has the correct oil level and the plug can be
replaced.
(6) Because the IDG case can be pressurized after its operation, a pushbutton vent
valve is installed on the IDG case to release the pressure from the IDG oil system
before servicing.
(7) Oil is removed from the IDG through a drain at the bottom of the IDG case. The
drain is closed with a removable plug.
B. APU Oil−Tank Replenishing
Refer to Figure 2.
(1) The APU is installed in an enclosure in the aft equipment compartment. An access
panel on the rear of the APU enclosure is opened to get access to the APU.

(2) The APU is lubricated with turbine oil contained in an integral oil tank at the bottom
of the APU gearbox. A sight gauge on the side of the APU oil tank and a dipstick
mounted on the filler cap show the oil level. Oil is added through a filler port with a
cap that is installed on the side of the APU oil tank adjacent to the sight gauge.
(3) A drain plug is installed in the bottom of the oil tank for the removal of the APU oil
supply. A removable magnetic plug in the drain plug catches ferrous metal particles
in the oil. The magnetic plug can be removed by hand. When the magnetic plug is
removed, a check valve in the drain plug keeps oil in the tank. This permits the oil to
be examined for metal particles with the oil supply in the APU.
C. Engine Oil−System Replenishing
Refer to Figure 3.
(1) Each engine is lubricated with turbine oil contained in an external oil tank mounted
on the side of the engine. To get access to the tank, the upper engine translating
and core cowls are opened. The tank has a filler cap that lets the oil be added
directly into the tank. An oil−quantity sight indicator is installed above the filler cap
to show high oil quantity in the tank. A low oil−pressure probe, also installed above
the filler cap, sends a signal to the cockpit to show that oil must be added. A drain
plug with a magnetic chip detector is installed on the bottom of the oil tank.
(2) A remote oil replenishing system permits both oil tanks to be filled from the aft
equipment compartment. The system includes the components that follow:
– Oil replenishment tank
– Oil replenishment pump
– Manual selector valve
– Signal conditioner
– Oil−level control panel.
All of the components are installed aft of the rear equipment−compartment door.
(3) The replenishment tank holds a supply of engine oil and includes a filler cap and
sight−tube oil−quantity indicator.
(4) The replenishment pump is electrically operated and supplies oil from the
replenishment tank to the engine oil tanks through the manual selector valve.
(5) The manual selector valve has a round selector handle with L (left), R (right), and
OFF positions. The handle is spring loaded to the OFF position. When the valve is
operated, the replenishment pump is activated and oil is directed to the left or right
engine oil tank as set by the valve.
(6) The signal conditioner unit controls the electrical power supply from the power
switch to the selector valve. It also receives signals from the two engine oil−level
probes.
(7) The oil−level control panel has a system ON/OFF switch, an ON indicator light, and
two oil−tank indicator lights identified LH FULL and RH FULL. The ON light comes
on when the system is energized with the ON/OFF switch. The FULL lights come
on in response to sensor probes in the oil tanks that find a full or not full condition
when the system is energized. The indicator lights have a press−to−test function.
(8) To fill the engine oil tank, the replenishment tank is filled with oil and the system is
energized. When the manual selector valve is turned and held at the L (left engine)
or R (right engine) position, the replenishment pump is activated and oil is pumped

into the selected engine oil tank. When the engine oil tank is full, a FULL indication
is shown on the oil−level control panel and the pump stops automatically. The
selector valve can be released to OFF or moved to the opposite selection to fill the
oil tank of the other engine. Oil is added to the replenishment tank as necessary.
D. ATS Oil−Reservoir Replenishing
Refer to Figure 4.
(1) There are two ATS’s on the aircraft. One ATS is installed on each engine. For
servicing, the lower translating−core cowl of the engine is opened to get access to
the ATS.
(2) The ATS is lubricated with turbine oil contained in an integral oil reservoir. A filler
port on the ATS case has a removable filler plug to permit the oil level to be
examined and the oil to be added. The reservoir is full when the oil is at the bottom
of the filler port threads.
(3) A drain plug with a magnetic chip detector is installed at the bottom of the case.
