Detuned, Series Filter Reactor

for Power Factor correction capacitor

* Superior Quality
* Proven Track Record Since 2000
* Comply to IEC60076-6:2007
* KEMA test Certificate of Compliance
* Design and Manufactured in Malaysia
Application of detuned reactor in a capacitor bank
1. To create a 'detuned' natural frequency with PF capacitor. This eliminate system resonance
with harmonics which will damage the capacitor bank.
2. To reduce the switching transient inrush current of capacitor. This will reduce the circuit
breaker failure and reduce flickers in the power system. In short it is used to prolong the
service life of the PF capacitor and breakers.
3. To reduce harmonics distortion and reduce the problems associated with this harmonics such
as overheating of transformer and nuisance tripping of circuit breaker.
4. To reduce the system 'noise' which may interfere with electronics and computer system.
5. Detuned reactor should be installed where there are inverter, AC variable speed drive, DC
drive, lifts, energy saving lights, UPS, computers, rectifiers, air-conditioners, or system that
consume current in a non-linear manner.

Detuned or Filtering % p
1. Filtering % p is the ratio of inductance to capacitance. It is not to be confused with the
impedance or reactance of an inductor.
2. This series circuit created a natural frequency: Fres = 1/[2π(L*C)^0.5]
For a 50Hz system:
• p=7% = 189Hz
• p=5.67% = 210Hz (for Malaysia, 6%, 204Hz is used)
• p=14% = 134Hz (for Malaysia, 13%, 139Hz is used)
3. p = 7% is used where optimal protection to capacitor and harmonics reduction is acheived.
4. p = 13% is to be used where the system is rich in 3rd harmonics.
5. p = 5.67% is used where harmonics reduction in the system is required. This must be done
with care as it may 'import and magnify' harmonics current. It may cause system resonance
and premature capacitor and reactor failure.
6. If system THUD exceeded the limits of EN50160 of 8%, A system with p=8%, 177Hz reactor
may be used for capacitor protection. (EN50160:1999 is EU std. 2003 on power quality)

Unique Features Of Inter Win Reactors

1. Iron Core: High permeability, low loss 0.35mm silicon steel is used. It has about half the losses
of 0.5mm silicon steel. It result in a reactor with higher linear performance and is suitable to
be used in high harmonics environment.
2. Distributed gaps core: Multiple small gaps are used in the core. It reduces stray flux losses and
further enhance the linear performance of the reactor. Epoxy sheet is used in gaps.
3. Coil former (bobbin): DuPont engineering poly-amide resin. Suitable up to 180°C operation.
4. Conductors – Class 220°C enamel alu-wire for small units. Alu-foil for bigger units.
• 'Skin effect' losses: the use of small wire and foil has eliminated this losses. (skin effect is
due to high frequency current that travel on a conductor surface)
• 'short circuit withstanding': alu-foil coil have good withstanding to short-circuit shock
protection. For current greater than 50A, most InterWin reactors are foil wound.
5. Layer insulation: DuPont pure Nomex is used for all sizes. It is UL approved for use as class
220°C insulation material. Non flammable.
6. Terminations: Copper cable lug and bar. Non corrosive Alu-Cu brazing applied.
7. Thermostat: Bi-metal thermostat from Klixon is used. 150°C, normally close type.
8. Varnish: UL listed 180°C solvent-less, non flammable varnish. Completely immersed and
vacuum impregnated. Oven cured. Exposed core is painted with black varnish to improve heat
transfer and prevent rusting.
Specification of Inter Win Reactor
1. Fully design and manufactured in Malaysia.
2. Comply to the all major brand capacitor manufacturer's specifications on reactors.
3. EN50160 & IEC61000 on voltage harmonics requirement are the basic for designing the
harmonics current capacity of the reactor.
• The maximum 'Total Voltage Harmonics (THUD)' the reactor will withstand is 8%
• The maximum individual harmonic order shall not exceed:
3rd order = 5.0%
5th order = 6.0%
7th order = 5.0%
9th order = 1.5%
11th order = 3.5%
13th order = 3.0%
4. The thermal current limits shall be 1.05x the above RMS current value. It is also the current
value printed on the label.
5. Inductance value shall be -0.0%, + 5.0% of its name plate value.
6. Inductance linearity – less than 5.0% drop of its initial inductance value. It is the ratio of peak
current and thermal current. Peak current = 1.414*(fundamental + total harmonics current)
7% reactor = 1.9x
5.67% reactor = 2.5x
13% reactor = 1.6x
** For THUD greater than 8%, the linearity may be increase to prevent saturation of iron core.
7. Insulation class = Class H, 180°C. Non flame supporting materials are used.
8. Insulation strength = 3.0KV 1 minute between life parts and body.
9. Operating ambient temperature = 40°C max.
10. Natural cooling AN class. Exhaust fan is require to maintain the enclosure to less than 40°C.
11. Vacuum impregnated varnish to reduce noise and prolong the service life.
12. Unmentioned specification shall be according to IEC60076-6:2007 Part 7 & 8.

PF Capacitor suitable for use with detuned reactor

When a reactor is series connected to a capacitor, the voltage impressed upon the capacitor increase
by an amount equal to the reactor filtering factor.
Uc = Un/(1-p) example: Un=415V50Hz, with 7% reactor
Uc = 415V/(1-0.07) = 446.2V
Another factor to consider is the additional harmonics current drawn into the capacitor which will
also increase the capacitor voltage. Utility supply may also be supplying voltage higher than the
nominal rated value. For this reason, the rated voltage for capacitor shall be higher than that without
the use of reactor.

** Use matching pair of capacitor with its reactor only, wrong matching voids all warranty.
** For PF capacitor with star connection. It must be specified when ordering its matching reactor.

Measuring Reactor inductance and % p value.

Inductance - It should be done according to IEC60076-6:2007. - not by LCR meter.

% p - When at site and loaded, it can be done with PQ meter. Using the formula below:
% p = (output voltage of reactor – Input reactor voltage) / output voltage x 100%.
** read the voltage values at 50Hz from PQ meter, not the RMS value.
