Inclinometer Casing: Highlights

The document describes an inclinometer casing which is a pipe installed in boreholes, piles, fills, and walls to monitor lateral displacements. The casing has grooves that guide inclinometer probes to measure shear zones, slope movements, and surrounding soil changes during construction. It connects with couplings and can measure axial movements using rings. Specifications for the 71mm and 84mm diameter casings and accessories are provided.

CASING

Highlights
> Outside diameter 71 or 84 mm
> Impact resistant material with large wall thickness
> No separate couplings required - therefore quick installation
> Constant outer diameter of the pipe string
> No twisting of the pipe string due to milled keyways
> Mounting of settlement measuring rings possible (for Increx or
probe extensometer measurements)

General description
The inclinometer casing is installed, for example, in boreho-
les, piles, fills, retaining or diaphragm walls. A total of four
keyways (grooves) are arranged at an angle of 90° to each
other and serve to accommodate the wheels of inclinometer
probes. Generally, inclinometer probes are used to monitor
displacements perpendicular (lateral) to the casing axis.

The installation can be vertical, horizontal or inclined. Hori-

zontal displacements for vertical installation and settlement
curves for horizontal installation can be determined. The indi-
vidual casing tubes are connected to form a continuous pipe
string by means of the integrated couplings.
Applications
> Determination of shear and sliding zones in soil and rock
> Monitoring of open pits in diaphragm walls or piles
> Monitoring of slope stabilization and embankments
> Observation of pipe roof umbrellas
> Monitoring of dams and fills
Assembling the casing
> Observation of the surrounding soil during construction of
shallow tunnels

Principle of operation
The integrated couplings of the casing tubes are pushed
over each other and secured with glue and rivets. A fitting
button ensures an exact alignment of the grooves for the
entire pipe string. The inclinometer casing is installed with
a pair of grooves in the reference direction. For vertical
boreholes, the reference direction should be corresponding
to the expected movement. For horizontal and inclined
holes, one pair of grooves must be aligned vertically. The
annular space between the guide tube and the borehole wall
must complete be backfilled.
The lateral displacements of the casing are recorded using
mobile i nclinometer probes or stationary inclinometer
measuring chains (IPIs = In Place Inclinometer).
In order to record axial movements along the casing
(settlements during vertical installation), a combination with
Increx measuring rings, metallic sensing rings or magnetic
rings for the use of probe extensometers is possible. For the
geodetic monitoring of 3D displacements of the inclinometer
head, an optical target can be mounted on the top cap.
