Document 98 ANDRES BONIFACIO'S MANIFESTO CALLING FOR BRAVERY AGAINST THE SPANISH ADVANCE February or March 1897 While the Magdalo army was fighting desperately to stop the three-pronged Spanish advance through Silang, Zapote and Batan- gas, the Magdiwang soldiers were in their respective municipalities ‘awaiting the outcome. If the Spanish division broke through the Magdalo lines {as eventually it did), the Magdiwang men would then have to fight to defend their own towns. It was in preparation for such an event that Bonifacio (who by this time had taken effective control of the Magdiwang faction) issued his Manifesto. That army, in such a short span of time, has demonstrated marked cowardice and base conduct by torturing and killing multitudes of our non-com- batant people. Their burning of the towns, their desecration of the purity of our women without regard for their weakness, the murder of the old and of helpless infonts, — these acts are not those of any man of honor and courage. They cry out for vengeance and justice. After the bloody encounter, you may perhaps be found lifeless on the battle field: but this is an honorable legacy for our country, for our race and for our family. Your dying breath will be the breath of life of our nation and will serve as ‘@ loving memory to your brothers whom you leave behind.\ You must realize that the reason why we give our life and all that we have, is for us to be able to hold and to che the much desired Independence of our nation which will aring forth comfort and avenge our desecrated honor crushed by slavery and buried in the abyss of subhuman treatment) Will you be faint-hearted ond reluctant to face death because of these?
