Intrapersonal skills are skills within an individual that helps in controlling their attitudes,

emotions, beliefs and also to cope with challenges they may face in their immediate

environment. Intrapersonal skills are found within oneself and these skills helps in managing

situations in life. In most cases, intrapersonal skills are related to emotional intelligence of an

individual and their ability to make well informed decisions. How well they cope with their

emotions in times of trouble or when excited. Intrapersonal skills only focuses on self-awareness

that are fundamental in building relationships with other people in one’s environment. From

personal experience, when faced with pressure or difficult situations that may trigger emotional

outbursts, I tend to retreat and let my emotions cool down first in order to have a sober mind

when making decisions.

Cultivating intrapersonal skills is important since they are essential in everyday life. Being aware

of the environment and ones beliefs are essential when trying to focusing and developing an

individual’s intrapersonal skills. Being aware of the beliefs and values of an individual guides in

the development of one’s intrapersonal skills. In addition to being aware of an individual’s

innermost beliefs and attitudes, an individual needs to take the opinions of others as a means of

knowing and understanding their intrapersonal skills. In most cases, an individual may be

unaware of their intrapersonal skills since it may be difficult for an individual to see his or her

attitudes, or their attitudes or personal concepts may not match what people say about an

individual. Therefore, getting feedback from other people completely helps in defining and

developing an individual’s intrapersonal skills. For instance, I did not realize that I was a poor

listener until my colleague communicated this information to me. In this way, I tried to develop
and focus on my listening skills by avoiding talking and just listen when someone else is

speaking.

Our intrapersonal skills affects our behaviors, attitudes and how we relate with one another in

our immediate environment. As discussed earlier, intrapersonal skills involves how we control

our emotions and how we relate with people in the community. Having good intrapersonal skills

helps in forming good and positive behaviors. We are able to behave in an acceptable manner

that are mostly defined by the society that we live in. When an individual has good intrapersonal

skills, they are able to form lasting relationships in the society and they become more likable

with colleagues or anyone that they associate themselves with. One develops positive attitude in

life and they get to relate well with people surrounding them thus making an individual easy to

associate with. Forming good and positive relationships with people especially in the workplace

impacts positively on performance. An individual is able to work with others since they have a

sense of emotional maturity. They are able to solve any workplace conflict that may affect the

performance of an individual. From my experience, showcasing positive attitudes has helped me

in forming good and lasting relationships with people I associate myself with.

4.

Positive and good intrapersonal skills impacts positively on my attitudes since it helps me to

approach life in a different manner. Having intrapersonal skills such as self-discipline, self-

motivation, and self-confidence impacts positively in my attitudes. Having good self-discipline

as an intrapersonal skill impacts positively on my attitude towards people especially colleagues

and towards life in general. Through self-discipline, I am able to see positivity in everything and
having an optimistic attitude towards things that I come across. Every challenge or obstacle that

comes my way I see it as a positive challenge and maneuver through the obstacle and come up

with a better solution. Self-confidence as my intrapersonal skills impacts on my attitude on how I

manage to handle situations in life with confidence. I am able to come up with solutions with

confidence and I trust myself in coming up with good judgments that would not affect my life

and that of the people around me. For instance, I once came across a situation that requires me to

use self-discipline as an intrapersonal skill to make decisions. The self-discipline acquired has

fueled my attitude and how I handle situations in life. When something is not good for me, I

abstain from it and not go back to it no matter the pressure I get.

5.

Having good intrapersonal skills has influenced positively on my job performance. I relate well

with the people in my workplace and this helps in improving my job performance. One of the

most important skills in the workplace is having people skills since it helps in forming strong

relationships with colleagues which in turn impacts on job performance. In addition, emotional

maturity as an intrapersonal skill helps in solving any conflict that may arise in the workplace

and end up affecting job performance and the relationship between colleagues in the workplace.

Through emotional maturity, I am able to judge situations wisely and come up with well

informed decisions that are not only based on pure emotions. Having positive attitude in the

workplace leads to job satisfaction thus avoiding any frustrations that may be triggered in the

workplace and if they occur, I am able to handle them well.
