MTH 102 – CALCULUS 2

HOMEWORK 1

Deadline: 13.06.2021

Question 1. (8 points) Let R1 be the region bounded by the two axes (x & y) and the curve 𝑦 = 𝑘 cos 𝑥 (where k
𝜋
is some positive constant) for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2. Let 𝑉1 be the volume of the solid generated by revolving R1 about the x-
axis and let 𝑉2 be the volume of the solid generated by revolving R1 about the y-axis. Find the value(s) of the
constant k for which 𝑉1 = 𝑉2 .

Question 2. (8 points) A Koch snowflake is

created by starting with an equilateral
triangle with sides 1 unit long. Then, on the
middle third of each side of the curve, a new
equilateral triangle is constructed. This
process is repeated infinitely. The first four
steps are shown in the given figure.

a. What is the total area of the Koch

snowflake?
b. What is the total perimeter of the Koch
snowflake?

Question 3 ( 15 points) Find the sum of the given series:

∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞
𝟒 𝟐𝟑𝐧−𝟏 𝟑𝐧 − 𝟐 𝟑 𝟏
a. ∑ b. ∑ 𝟐𝐧+𝟏 c. ∑ d. ∑ e. ∑
𝟑𝐧+𝟏 𝟑 𝟕𝐧 𝟐
𝟒𝐧 − 𝟏 𝟗𝐧𝟐 + 𝟑𝐧 − 𝟐
𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏

Question 4. (15 points) Determine whether the given series converge or diverge. State clearly which test you are
using and implement the test as clearly as you can.
∞ ∞ 𝟑 ∞ ∞ ∞
𝟏 √ 𝐧𝟓 + 𝟑 𝟑 + (−𝟏)𝒏 𝒏 ∙ 𝟓𝒏 𝒏! ∙ 𝟐𝒏
a. ∑ b. ∑ c. ∑ d. ∑ 𝒏 e. ∑
𝟏 + 𝐥𝐧 𝒏 𝟓𝐧𝟒 + 𝟒 𝒏𝟑 𝟔 −𝟑 (𝟐𝐧)!
𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝒏=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏

Question 5 ( 12 points) Are the given statements true? For each statement, prove it if it is true, or give a
counterexample to show that it is false.

a. If the series ∑∞ ∞ 𝑛
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 (where 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 for every n) converges, then the series ∑𝐧=𝟏(−1) 𝑎𝑛
converges too.
b. If the series ∑∞ ∞ 𝑛
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 (where 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 for every n) diverges, then the series ∑𝐧=𝟏(−1) 𝑎𝑛 diverges
too.
𝑎𝑛+1
c. If the series ∑∞
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 satisfies 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 and 0 < 𝑎 < 1 for every n, then it converges.
𝑛
d. If the series ∑∞ ∞
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 and ∑𝐧=𝟏 𝑏𝑛 (where 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 and 𝑏𝑛 ≥ 0 for every n) both diverge, then the
series ∑∞ 𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 + 𝑏𝑛 diverges too.
e. If the series ∑∞ ∞
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 and ∑𝐧=𝟏 𝑏𝑛 (where 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 and 𝑏𝑛 ≥ 0 for every n) both converge, then the
series ∑∞ 𝐧=𝟏 max(𝑎𝑛 , 𝑏𝑛 ) converges too.
f. If the series ∑∞ ∞
𝐧=𝟏 𝑎𝑛 and ∑𝐧=𝟏 𝑏𝑛 (where 𝑎𝑛 ≥ 0 and 𝑏𝑛 ≥ 0 for every n) both diverge, then the
series ∑∞ 𝐧=𝟏 max(𝑎𝑛 , 𝑏𝑛 ) diverges too.

Question 6 ( 9 points) Find the radius of the convergence and the interval of convergence for the given power
series:
∞ ∞ ∞
𝐧 𝒏
𝟏 (𝒏!)𝟐
a. ∑ 𝟐𝐧+𝟏
(𝒙 + 𝟓) b. ∑ 𝐧 (𝟐𝒙 − 𝟕)𝒏 c. ∑ (𝒙 − 𝟔)𝒏
𝟑 𝟓 + 𝟒𝐧 (𝟐𝐧)!
𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏 𝐧=𝟏

Problem 7 (12 pts) The fish population 𝑃(𝑡) at a certain lake is changing according the differential
𝑑𝑃
equation = 𝑔𝑃 − 𝐹 where the constants 𝑔 and 𝐹 represent respectively the birth rate and the fishing
𝑑𝑡
rate.

a. Find an expression for 𝑃(𝑡) at any time 𝑡, if 𝑃(0) = 𝑃0 . (The answer will be in terms of 𝑃0 , g, F
and t)
b. If 𝑃0 = 2000000 and 𝑔 = 0.05, for which values of the constant F, the fish population will be
decreasing?
c. Let 𝑃0 = 2000000 and 𝑔 = 0.05. If after three years a quarter of the initial population remain, so
𝑃(3) = 500000, what has been the fishing rate (F) ?
d. In the scenario of the c. part of this question, after noticing the drastic decrease in the fish
population, the local government employs a fishing moratorium (all fishing activities will be
banned) until the fish population reaches 1000000. How many years is the moratorium expected to
last?

Question 8 ( 12 points) Solve the given initial value problems:

𝑑𝑦 𝑥𝑦 2

𝑑𝑥 √𝑥 2 +5
𝑑𝑦 𝑥 2 +3
b. = , 𝑦(0) = 2
𝑑𝑥 𝑦 2 +𝑥 2 𝑦 2
𝑑𝑦 1−2𝑥𝑦
c. = , 𝑦(1) = 0
𝑑𝑥 𝑥 2 +1

Question 9( 9 points) Find an approximate solution on a unit interval for one of the IVP-s given in the previous
question and compare it with the precise solution (that you have found when solving question 7).
