The Person on the Bridge

by Awilda I. Castro Suárez

To Tyler Clementi

Nobody on the George Washington bridge

heard the splash of his body,
hundreds of people drove over the bridge,
some thinking about dinner or unpaid bills,
none thought about the violinist ready to jump.
They said his privacy was violated,
streamed live on the Internet,
Tweeted,
posted in Facebook,
bullied, what happens in the intimacy of their rooms,
the scapegoat of so many prejudices. we shove them deeper and deeper inside their closets,
We weren‘t there we may say, each time we deny them the right to marry,
we didn‘t put the camera in his room, we stamp them as third class citizens.
we are innocent, Yes we are responsible of that person‘s desperation,
but the truth is we aren‘t, this person is a son, a niece, a grandson, an aunt,
each time we use the word gay as a joke the kind nurse who takes care of your mother,
we kill another Tyler Clementi, the lawyer who fights for your rights,
each time faggot or dyke comes out of a mouth the newspaper delivery guy,
we kill another Brandon Teena, a poet,
each time we use homosexual as a synonym for a sexual predator actually, a couple of years back that desperate person,
we kill another Matthew Shephard, was me.
each time we feel superior enough to judge
