(1) (10+20+30=60 points)

Let T : R2 → R3 be a linear transformation. Consider the following map S : R4 → R3 defined for any
(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) in R4 by
S(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) = 2T (x1 , x2 ) − T (x3 , x4 ).

(i) Justify that S is a linear transformation.


(ii) If T is one to one, find a basis for the kernel of S.
(iii) Consider following ordered bases

B2 = {(1, 1), (1, 0)} for R2 , B4 = {(1, 1, 0, 0), (0, 1, 1, 0), (0, 0, 1, 1), (0, 0, 1, 0)} for R4 ,

and consider any ordered basis


B3 = {~v1 , ~v2 , ~v3 } for R3 .
If the matrix representation B3 [T ]B2 of T with respect to the ordered bases B2 and B3 is
