WORD CLASSES

Noun A person, place or thing.


Verb An action or ‘doing’ word.
Adjective A word that is used to describe. They can be
used before a noun or after a verb.
Adverb A word that describes verbs (actions). They often
have a ‘ly’ ending (e.g., hopefully, quietly).
Conjunction A word that joins two sentences or clauses (e.g.,
and/so/but/because).
Pronoun A word that takes the place of a noun (e.g., I,
you, we, they, he, she, it, me, him, her, his, her,
mine, yours).
Preposition A word that tells you where or when something
is in relation to something else. This could be
time (later, before, after) or position (behind,
between).
IDENTIFYING WORD CLASSES

Read the paragraphs carefully. In the table below, copy a word that
matches the word class. An example, her, has been provided.

EXERCISE 1
Her sister, Miss Watson, a woman who had never married and who had no children of her

own, came to live with her. She hopefully thought that she could change me and make me a

better person by educating me and teaching me to spell. She worked with me for an hour until

I told her I had enough!.

I sat down again feeling very frightened. The house was very quiet. Everyone was asleep. Far
away I heard a clock go “boom-boom-boom” 12 times at midnight. Then, all was quiet again.
Soon, I heard a quiet “meow, meow!” outside my window so I answered, “meow, meow!” as
quietly as I could.
